What's there to Love about Vampires?

They are the epitome of dark and dangerous, and yet vampires continue to fascinate us with their 'come hither' ways. Even elements of evil cannot pull us from our desires to be called closer.

His breath against your neck, strong arms to hold you, powerful eyes to command you; these are what a female would notice when a male vampire takes her in his embrace. Why then does she submit?

Tell me there isn't a small part that want a powerful man in our lives? Someone confident and passionate. A man we feel safe and in danger with at the same time. For him, we are the 'one'.

How does the Autumn season influence your mood?

Welcome to the autumnal equinox, otherwise known as Fall. I love this time of year, not just for the cooler temperatures and change in the leaves, but for its inspirational ambiance as well. This is the time of transition from light to the mysteries of the dark.

The autumn season has an interesting effect on my mood. I find myself feeling more restless, wilder. I change out my flowers arrangements to beautiful gold and red leaves. I light more candles in the evenings, most in flavors of pumpkin or apple spice. I also love to sit out at night and stare up at the sky, the beautiful twinkle of thousands of stars as my only companion.

Then, there is the baking. Oh, how I love to create delicious desserts. There something about the smell of pies and spice-filled pastries. I have a cranberry upside down cake on my blog, Romance Author Lifestyle today. Feel free to check it out.

This is a romantic time of year, when magic blends with the night. I find myself reading more books on vampires and werewolves, and anything else that lurks beneath the blanket of stars. So long ago, this season was where my vampire erotica, Tasting Camilla, first came to mind.

October 1st will be your chance to delve into the night world of a dominant master vampire and the mortal who awakens his desires. This is a short erotica story for those who wonder what lurks in the night, and what is it like to surrender yourself to those darker desires.

Do supernatural creatures belong in a modern setting?

When I think of vampires and other supernatural creatures, I picture them in time periods without electricity and other modern technology. I think of candlelight and moving unnoticed through darkened paths or streets. I have a hard time thinking of vampires or others of their kind in a modern setting. I don’t think creatures like that belong in modern times. But maybe that’s just me.

I prefer to write about these otherworldly creatures in Medieval and earlier time periods. I have numerous supernatural beings in my stories like faeries, shapeshifters, Greek vampires, a vengeance goddess and in my soon-to-be released series set in Bronze Age Arcadia, I have centaurs, nymphs, werewolves, blood-drinking creatures and a crow woman. But that being said, I’ve started a story with vampires, werewolves, witches, gods and faeries in a modern setting. I want to show how difficult it is for these creatures to exist in a modern world.

One of my challenges is whether or not my magical beings can work magic in a world with cell phones and computers. Does technology interfere with magic? Does technology weaken them? These are a couple of the reasons I feel that supernatural beings are out of place in a modern world. I wonder how they can move about without being captured on a camera. I suppose vampires wouldn’t be caught on 35mm film, but what about digital photographs?

It seems I have a lot to think about as I work out this story.

The scary vampires are back

I read The Strain and now I am watching the TV series based on the books. The premise behind The Strain is that vampirism is more like a virus that transforms the human body into some kind of creature or organism with no sense of humanity. All they want to do is feed and make more vampires. And the way they feed is really gross—they have these long tongue-like things that extend out of their mouth. It’s really freaky to imagine something like this could be real.

What I like about this vampire series is that there is nothing loveable about these vampires. They are frightening. And changing into one of these vampires is anything but sexy. I love being scared and the recent vampire books and movies are not scary at all. In fact, some are just silly. I grew up in the era of the non-sparkly vampires, and I welcome this new wave of vampires like the ones in 30 Days of Night that spent the whole movie wearing dried blood and Let Me In where childlike innocence is a disguise for a true predator. And now I look forward to watching the truly inhuman ones in The Strain.

Finally, vampires are scary again and there is nothing better than a good scare.

How I came to write paranormal stories

I’ve been quite surprised to find myself writing paranormal stories. I saw myself as writing contemporaries, about ordinary people who find their very hot happily ever after.
But when I thought about a Halloween story, a werewolf just appeared in my head and started talking to me. The end result of that was “Dogged Pursuit” an MM romance. Which is pretty much how my first paranormal book happened. I was writing “Intensity”, Keziah’s story, when a ghost just appeared out of nowhere and took over. John Smith told me “Intensity” was his story as much as Keziah’s. Of course, I was hardly surprised when I sat down to write Tia’s story, “Complexity”, set in the same world as “Intensity”, and another ghost arrived. Gillian explained she was a relative of John Smith’s and she needed Tia’s help. What’s an author to do? Some days I think I just take dictation!

The third book in that world, “Eternity”, is also an MMF ménage. But this time both heroes are vampires. One of them has been a minor character in both previous books, and when I was thinking about the possibility of writing a third book, he told me he was a vampire, and it was time I gave him a happy forever after. Fortunately, the perfect woman for him and his partner was available. I’d hate to annoy a vampire! Or a werewolf. Or even a ghost!
Since then I’ve written several more werewolf stories, “Were the Hell”, another MM Halloween book, and “Werewolves Can’t Fly” an MMF and the sequel to “Flight to Joy”.
But I’ve also managed to write some non-paranormal contemporaries as well.

“Dogged Pursui” blurb:
Dwyer is a two-hundred-year-old werewolf currently working as a limo driver. He’s enticed by the scent of a man he has to take into the city. The man’s smell overwhelms him and calls to him “mate”. Yet he thought only a male and a female could mate and he is gay.
Nelson is equally attracted to Dwyer and the two spend a very hot night together.
However their second date is on Halloween and Dwyer is really struggling to keep his wolf under control.
How is Dwyer going to get himself out of this mess? And what will Nelson’s reaction be? Can they possibly have a future together?

Halloween Giveaway by D.A. Berry

Let me introduce you to Lucian Monroe, a 400yr old vampire whose fate was altered one foggy night.
England~ 1608

After an evening of playing cards with some friends, the streets deserted, Lucian happened upon her. A beautiful woman dressed in a stunning velvet gown. Concerned for her well being he walked over and asked if she were lost—hurt or in need of assistance. Taking his hand ebony eyes gazed back at him and smiled. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain as she pierced the tender flesh on his neck. Little did the Earl of Monroe Castle know on the morrow; he would awaken one of the undead.

Centuries later his story is told in my 1st novel A Deepened Hunger. (And his inner most thoughts are revealed in ‘Lucian’s Journal’ on my blog site.) A protector of the gifted, the choice he makes to save a mortal female will change everything. As Jordan Pierce-Shayne became a part of his very essence that stormy October night.

The protector of the gifted vampire society continues in my other three novels. Each centering on characters whose existence has been tainted by the evil undead. So please visit my website to enter their world.

Throughout the centuries, many believe…

Existing as the undead, a vampire is incapable of human emotions, or loving another.
In truth, their masked feelings are penned in ink, to appease the loneliness which tears apart the soul.

™˜ A Vampire’s Journal
September ~ 1608
A Changed Existencef

Deep beneath the earth, I sensed darkness had returned. Yet again, the burning pain tore apart my soul—this new form of hunger I feared never to quench. Then suddenly, she was there—the one with ebony eyes, the creature who cursed me. As she came closer, I fought to break free of her hold and failed. For her strength was that of ten knights as she drew my lips over the open wound on her wrist. As a drop of her blood coated my tongue, a yearning feeling filled me—one I could not resist. The liquid was a drug—the elixir—that eased my pain—nourished my body. Sinking my teeth deeper her gentle voice invaded my thoughts telling me not to fear what I’d become. For it was necessary to protect mankind from the evils walking this earth.
Watching as my translucent flesh suddenly turned vibrant in color, I fully understood her words. The beauty with ebony eyes turned me into what people believed only folklore—an undead—a creature of the night. The Earl of a respected family was now a vampire.
™˜
December~ 1608
Three Moons Undeadf
Once darkness covered the earth, I awoke. As always, the burning feeling within my soul I must nourish my corpse—to ease the hunger. Reminding me… I am ‘undead’. With a single thought, I hovered over the city, my creator—waiting, smiling. She was beyond pleased how quickly I’d mastered transforming from mist to human form. Taking my hand we hunted as one, two vampires seeking their prey. As we approached the square, I began to salivate. For the smell of human blood as it pumped through their veins was exhilarating.

Piercing my thoughts, Kara whispered, “This is your final test. Now take control of her mind Lucian and call the young woman toward you. Then mask reality and feed—but do not drain her! Remember what I taught you… we do not kill to survive for there is no need.”

Ravished, I felt my teeth lengthen. Drawing in a breath, I wrapped the woman within my arms, easing her fear with a soothing kiss. My hunger intensified I sank my fangs deep into her flesh. As the warm liquid coated my throat, the burning within began to subside. Fighting my inner self to calm the beast, I took only what I needed then closed the wound with my healing tongue. Sensing Kara’s approval I smiled relieved, I did not disappoint her. Once both our hunger satisfied, we strolled beneath the moonlit sky. Again, I asked why she had chosen me, why not another. For I was an Earl from birth, my father’s first born and this existence dishonored the Monroe name—my country. The vampire glanced up at me with sorrow filled eyes, her thoughts unmasked. The sorrow within was not for turning me into one of the undead—but for all of mankind...

After Kara became one with the night, I sit alone in this darkened crypt—waiting for the sleep of the dead to claim me—yet again. How, I yearn to visit—Monroe Castle. Yearn for my mother’s smile, my sister’s laughter. Three full moons have passed over the earth since the night, I was made a vampire. Damn you to the devil Kara, you had no right to claim this soul! My loyalty will forever be to England and my family. And by God, I shall find a way to live among them as the creature you turned me into—

Lucian Monroe~
