Signs of spring

Everywhere around me are the signs of spring from beautiful flowers to crazy spring breakers hanging out on the lake, and coming into grocery stores half-naked in bikinis. My husband likes the last sign of spring. Smile

The lighter half of the year was an important time for ancient societies that counted on the warm months for new crops and feed for their herds. After a long harsh winter, spring was greeted with celebrations and smiles.

While I enjoy the winter months of shorter days and cold nights, I look forward to spring. The longer days of sunlight help me get more work accomplished and I feel more energetic.

In Greek mythology this is the time when Persephone is released from the Underworld and returned to her mother, Demeter.

In Christianity, spring is the time when Jesus was resurrected. The Christian Easter has origins from the Teutonic Eostre, a spring goddess that symbolized renewal and fertility. But how did a rabbit handing out eggs become the symbol for Easter? Rabbits or hares represent fertility and fruitfulness. The egg is also a symbol of rebirth and renewal. Hares often find small depressions in the ground to sit in for protection. In the spring, a bird called a lapwing nests on the ground. Sometimes hares find the depressions made by the lapwings and sit in the nests and it looks like the hares are hatching the eggs. And that is how the rabbit (hare) and the egg became symbols of Easter.

So, here where I live we have the usual signs of Easter that everyone recognizes and we also get the young, wild spring breakers, a sure sign of spring.

Christmas Lights You Never Want Your Kids To See

Welcome to the Secret Santa Blog Hop. You will find all the information on how the hop works and the list of blogs by following this link or clicking on the Secret Santa tab at the top of the blog. Time to start hopping! Hope you have loads of fun and win some great prizes. Who will be your Secret Santa? You have to hop to find out!

http://tabithablake.blogspot.com/p/secret-santa-blog-hop.html

Thought I would show you the strange side of Christmas. Hang on tight things are fixing to get really weird! Some things are just down right wrong! Not sure what some people are thinking when they do crazy lights like these. You don't want to have to explain these lights to your kids. WOW! Unbelievable! The Christmas Spirit just went out the window and the strange and demented ideas have come out. These lights are twisted!

You might be a redneck if you...put this ghastly thing out for Christmas. This is just wrong in so many ways. Poor Rudolph. I'm not sure if I want to laugh or stare in shock. Horrendous!

I'm just picturing a kid asking, "Mom why does Santa have a gun?" I'm all for funny but this is kind of pushing it. Not something you want to explain to your kids. Santa Hunting deer is just way over the top.

This made me laugh a little just because it is so outrageous. Who does this stuff? You know what never mind I don't even want to know. Unbelievable! Some people should be ashamed to put a display like this in their front yard for all to see. Good luck explaining that to your kids!

I don't even know what to say about this one? What the heck? Man people really are freaking nuts!

That's it folks. The tour of the demented Christmas Lights has come to an end. I will leave you with one question. What was picture two of?

Now it is time to give away a prize and I have a really great one for you. Me and Nicole Morgan are giving ways a copy of her book Sweet Salvation. I have read this book and just loved it. Please leave a comment with your email address to win.

[Siren Allure: Erotic Contemporary Romantic Suspense] Falling in love with his best friend wasn't what Rex had intended, but it seemed that when it came to Shelby all bets were off. Black Cats and Witches by Guest Blogger Tara Lain

Please welcome Tara Lain to NN! We are so excited to have you!

Happy Halloween! I’m delighted to be a guest here at Nocturnal Nights and thank Tabitha so much for inviting me. Since it’s the spookiest day of the year, let’s talk about witches and black cats. I just completed an LGBT paranormal novel called Brush with Catastrophe. It’s the sequel to the very popular paranormal novel, Spell Cat. Both books are about witches--very contemporary witches who live in New York City and go to college there. One of the key characters in both books is a black cat named Aloysius. In fact, the series is called The Aloysius Tales.

Black cats have been connected with witches from the time of the middle ages and before. Black cats have so many myths and legends associated with them it could fill books. It’s lucky to dream of one but unlucky to have one cross your path. If a black cat lies on the bed of a sick person they will die, but a strange black cat found on the porch brings prosperity. It was largely in the Middle Ages that the black cat became associated with evil. Because cats are nocturnal and roam at night, they were believed to be supernatural servants of witches, or even witches themselves.

In Brush with Catastrophe, my black cat is indeed a witches’ familiar. His name is Aloysius and he is very powerful but can only use that power to magnify the power of the witch to whom he is bound. Aloysius is the familiar of Killian Barth, the most powerful male witch in ten generations and the Witch Master, but early in our story he attaches himself to Sammy Raphael, a young witch with np perceptible power except prophetic painting. Occasionally, he paints something in the middle of the night and what he paints comes true. But his paintings always seem to be insignificant -- until he paints a picture of a beautiful man and it turns out to be his best freidn Ryder whom Sammy has secretly loved for years. Ryder, however, has changed so much over the summer vacation that he’s almost unrecognizable. And yet, he’s human, not a witch. And then Sammy paints an angel--who turns out to be a witch and a student at Sammy’s college. But that angel may just be a devil! And Sammy could end up having to save a lot of the people he loves from that devil! Aloysius always backs a winner. Why is he backing Sammy?

I loved writing this book. Because it’s contemporary I got to maintain the laws of the natural world and then allow my witches to violate them a bit. It was fun to ask what the world would be like if there were witches that appeared to be mere humans but with more power. And inBrush with Catastrophe, we learn that they are very much among us. Muwhahahahahha.

Would you like to win a $10 Gift Card or a signed copy of Golden Dancer in print, or a bag of swag, or a choice of ebook from my backlist? Just leave a comment WITH YOUR EMAIL. Winners will be announced on November 5th! Just come to my book blog Beautiful Boys Books to see the winner. Hint-- every comment is entered for the Gift Card, but the other prizes will be awarded to people who comment on the “mystery” blogs during the tour. Only I know which ones they are. So hop over to Beautiful Boys Books and look at the tour schedule. You may want to add a comment to some of the other blogs just to up your chances of winning the prizes. And thank you so much for visiting!

Brush with Catastrophe:

College art student Sammy Raphael is a crappy witch. And he can't get a
boyfriend. Sammy's had a passion for his BFF, Ryder McMasters, for years, but Ryder is straight and human. Talk about hopeless causes! And where other supernaturals can bring down lightning and manifest wealth, all Sammy can do is paint. True, the "prophetic" paintings he does at night always come true, but they never predict anything important -- until he paints a picture of a gorgeous man who turns out to be Ryder but so changed he's barely recognizable. Then Sammy paints an angel --who turns out to be a devil that threatens Sammy's community and the man he loves. With the black cat familiar, Aloysius, at his side, Sammy steps up to save the world--with a paint brush.

Spell Cat:

When Killian Barth, history professor, meets Blaine Genneau, quantum
physicist, they ignite their own big bang. But sadly, Killian walks away
because he doesn't do physics professors. In fact, he doesn't do humans,
because Killian is the most powerful male witch in 10 generations and,
though gay, he's expected to save his declining race by reproducing. Sex
with humans depletes his power he's been taught. Then why can young human, Jimmy Janx, dissolve spoons with a thought? Somebody's a lying witch. With his powerful cat familiar, Aloysius, on his shoulder, Killian brings the lightning against deceit and greed to save Blaine from danger and prove love is the greatest power of them all.

Memorable Characters by Nina Pierce

Please welcome Nina Pierce to NN! We're so excited to have you with us!

Like so many authors, I read all the time. I have a book with me wherever I go whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or the vet’s office. Nothing passes time like hanging out with some good friends or at least … a hawt hero or two. *g*

You see, it’s not the surprising twisting plot or the amazing world the author creates that keeps me turning the pages. It’s the people in the story and their journey that propels me from chapter to chapter. I’m all about the character driven stories. Of course I love to read romance. I make no bones about it. I enjoy all subgenres of romance from dark paranormals to action packed science fiction to cozy mysteries. But no matter where I find myself in time, contemporary or historical, I want to fall in love even as the hero and heroine are falling in love. I want to laugh and cry and ache for the characters as life throws one hardship after another at them.

I’ve loved many books, but few of them have stayed with me for years. Meggie, from the Thornbirds (Colleen McCullough), Charles Wallace from A Wrinkle in Time (Madeleine L’Engle), Ayla and Jondalar from the Earth’s Children series (Jean M. Auel) and Zainal from the Freedoms series (Anne McCaffrey) are a few of the characters I’ve thought about long after I finished the book. They just left a mark on me that I couldn’t seem to shake even after the author offered me their happy endings.

All writers want to create those kinds of characters. The ones that haunt your dreams and sneak up on you while you’re doing the dishes, random thoughts bumping over your synapses and making you smile or better yet … sigh. And I’m no exception.

It’s not the times when a character, especially the hero, is showing his alpha traits and feeling strong that I remember. The moment they grab my emotions is when they’re vulnerable and he opens himself up to admit he needs help or he’s in pain. Oh, yeah, my heart is squeezed and they fall into the unforgettable category.

I’ve started a new vampire series and I hope I start hearing from readers that they just love the characters so much they want to read more about them. Here’s the blurb from Shadows of Fire.

BLURB:
A woman forced to live a life she didn’t choose …
Thirty years ago, a horrendous attack in the California mountains thrust chemistry student, ALEXANDRA FLANAGAN, into the secret world of vampires. Now, unable to stomach the thought of drinking blood from another person, she survives on a chemical blood wine. But there are some who secretly disapprove of her clandestine activities and will do anything to stop her.

A vampire of honor protecting humans …
Ancient vampire, REESE COLTON, is part of an elite military operation seeking out and eliminating rogue vampires. Undercover as a firefighter, he and his team have been called in to investigate the unusual number of fires covering up the murders of vampires living on Alex’s blood wine.

A murderer seeking revenge …
When chemistry ignites passion, Reese and Alex find themselves embroiled in an affair that catches them both unaware. With the number of fires escalating and evidence against Alex mounting, Reese isn’t sure whether to follow his heart or the clues as he seeks to find a murderer in the Shadows of Fire.

Beautiful, Mystifying, Liliy Dale by Debra Jayne East

Please welcome guest blogger Debra Jayne East. We are so excited to have you!

It was just one of the days when I had the television on, and I was not really listening, but passing by from time to time glancing at the news on the Today program.  One such walk through my kitchen halted me in my steps, and I sat down and watched the entire segment. It was about a documentary called, “No One Ever Dies in Lily Dale.”
I was mesmerized and curious about the small town in Pomfret, New York, that was home to the largest Spiritualist community in the world. Lily Dale got its name because it sits on Cassadaga Lake, which is abundant with water lilies. In the 1840s, Kate and Margaret Fox moved to town and gained fame when it was reported that they were able to communicate with the dead, for real. After that, with a boost from the Spiritualist movement that was prominent at the time, word got around very quickly.
Soon, psychics, mediums and clairvoyants were filling up the small quaint town. Over the years, it has become a huge tourist attraction for the small nest of 300 odd residents who live there. The Victorian hamlet’s picturesque scenes and peacefulness soothe the hoards of over 200,000 visitors that flock there every year. Through the decades, hotels, amphitheaters, and auditoriums have sprung up. Psychic residents welcome visitors into their homes for private and professional readings.
Wonder what else to do when you get there? How about a tour guide who will take you on a "ghost walk" to see the darker side of Lily Dale? Don’t be surprised if you notice unexplained lights near the healing temple, or see spooky paintings in the ancient schoolhouse or visit the lake where apparitions have been seen floating in the mist.
It should be noted that women have played a strong role in the Spiritualist movement that still thrives there with its history of women providing a common link between the living and those that have died, dating back to the movement’s founders, the Fox sisters.  Speakers at Lily Dale have included Susan B. Anthony in 1891 and Elizabeth Lowe Watson, both pioneers in the suffrage movement.
After watching the documentary, its imagery and magic stayed with me. Being a writer, I dreamed of a special place where two worlds crossed over and fantasy became real. Lily Dale is that place. So much, that I included a visit for my heroine, Marena Jacobs, in my paranormal romance “Radiance: Love after Death.”
Someday, I will go on that pilgrimage to Lily Dale and experience for myself the spell of tranquility it leaves with all who enters its gates. Many people go back year after year, feeling drawn to its sanctuary of beauty and peace.
In the meantime, I hope you will read my story that Lily Dale inspired. Who knows, maybe it won’t be far fetched as it seems, but you’ll have to read it for yourself!
Blurb:
Marena Jacobs is involved in a car accident that very well should have taken her life if not for the intervention of otherworldly forces. She has thrown herself into her work to ease the pain, but she just can’t forget the past. Divorced from her childhood sweetheart, Ben, she never expected to be looking for love at her age. If not for finding an odd heart-shaped stone, she doesn’t know if she would even be here at all. The stone carries a message, even though your heart is broken, you can love again.

After waking from a coma, Marena has a long road to recovery. Looking for a change of scenery, she becomes a caretaker for a friend's home when the original house sitter failed to appear.
When the arrival of David Martin - the person originally hired to care for the house - Marena's life gets a bit more complicated.

No sooner than her new relationship begins it ends abruptly.
She ends up in Lily Dale, New York searching for the blind man she has become to love. Trouble is, someone else there does not want her to find him. Is she brave enough to keep on looking? You will believe true love never dies.

Thanks for having me as your guest and happy Halloween everyone!

The Haunted House Down the Street

Please welcome guest blogger Lynn Cahoon to NN. We're so glad to have you Lynn!

When I was seven, my best friend, Zandy, lived one block over and three streets up. I could ride my bike to her house and, one more block up, a corner mom and pop grocery store that sold penny candy.

The only problem is to get to both of these places, I had to ride past an old gray two story house with a flag pole in the middle of the weed filled yard.  No one had lived there for years.

Zandy’s brother said it was haunted by the ghost of a boy who’d slid down the greased flag pole and cut off his privates.  Okay, now, it sounds stupid, but give me a break, I was seven.  I didn’t even know what boy privates were.

Fast forward twenty years and my fiancé’ owned a house said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who committed suicide in the house.  When he rented the house to a young couple and we moved to another town to attend school, the checks stopped coming.  Come to find out, the husband had lost his job and had robbed a small grocery store, killing the owner for the money in the till.

My penny candy grocery store.

Do ghosts haunt our physical neighborhoods? Was there an evil presence at the haunted house of my youth that affected the actions of a desperate husband and father?  Or are the connections only in my own mind?

I wonder.

Now, I live down the street from a more famous haunted house, The McPike Mansion.  My new, home town is considered ghost heavy and with Halloween coming up, tours of the hauntings will be a nightly occurrence.

I haven’t signed up for a tour yet.  I’m not sure I want something following me home.  My heroine, Parris McCall, is kind of like that.  She knows she’s different, that weird stuff happens around her, but she doesn’t want to know, so she ignores the issue.  Until she can’t pretend any more.
A Member of the Council releases on November 5th from Lyrical Press.

So, do you believe in ghosts?

Lynn Cahoon is a contemporary romance author with a love of hot, sexy men, real and imagined. Her alpha heroes range from rogue witch hunters to modern cowboys. And her heroines all have one thing in common, their strong need for independence. Or at least that’s what they think they want.  She blogs at her website, A Fairy Tale Life.

Blurb - A rogue hunter, a clueless witch and a mission to save an unknowing world.

Parris McCall, owner of the dive bar, The Alibi, has finally constructed a life where her little quirks don’t show or matter to anyone. As for her grandmother's warnings that she’s different, well, she'll cross that bridge if she comes to it.
But when Ty walks into her bar, both lives are instantly changed.

Ty Wallace loves his life. How could he not? He’s a powerful human lawyer by day and the Magic Council's rogue witch hunter by night. But after he agrees to substitute on his
secretary’s dart team, all hell breaks loose. Now Ty has to help Parris admit who she is before her long-lost relatives kill her.

Halloween Giveaway by D.A. Berry

Let me introduce you to Lucian Monroe, a 400yr old vampire whose fate was altered one foggy night.
England~ 1608

After an evening of playing cards with some friends, the streets deserted, Lucian happened upon her. A beautiful woman dressed in a stunning velvet gown. Concerned for her well being he walked over and asked if she were lost—hurt or in need of assistance. Taking his hand ebony eyes gazed back at him and smiled. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain as she pierced the tender flesh on his neck. Little did the Earl of Monroe Castle know on the morrow; he would awaken one of the undead.

Centuries later his story is told in my 1st novel A Deepened Hunger. (And his inner most thoughts are revealed in ‘Lucian’s Journal’ on my blog site.) A protector of the gifted, the choice he makes to save a mortal female will change everything. As Jordan Pierce-Shayne became a part of his very essence that stormy October night.

The protector of the gifted vampire society continues in my other three novels. Each centering on characters whose existence has been tainted by the evil undead. So please visit my website to enter their world.

Throughout the centuries, many believe…

Existing as the undead, a vampire is incapable of human emotions, or loving another.
In truth, their masked feelings are penned in ink, to appease the loneliness which tears apart the soul.

˜ A Vampire’s Journal
September ~ 1608
A Changed Existencef

Deep beneath the earth, I sensed darkness had returned. Yet again, the burning pain tore apart my soul—this new form of hunger I feared never to quench. Then suddenly, she was there—the one with ebony eyes, the creature who cursed me. As she came closer, I fought to break free of her hold and failed. For her strength was that of ten knights as she drew my lips over the open wound on her wrist. As a drop of her blood coated my tongue, a yearning feeling filled me—one I could not resist. The liquid was a drug—the elixir—that eased my pain—nourished my body. Sinking my teeth deeper her gentle voice invaded my thoughts telling me not to fear what I’d become. For it was necessary to protect mankind from the evils walking this earth.
Watching as my translucent flesh suddenly turned vibrant in color, I fully understood her words. The beauty with ebony eyes turned me into what people believed only folklore—an undead—a creature of the night. The Earl of a respected family was now a vampire.
˜
December~ 1608
Three Moons Undeadf
Once darkness covered the earth, I awoke. As always, the burning feeling within my soul I must nourish my corpse—to ease the hunger. Reminding me… I am ‘undead’. With a single thought, I hovered over the city, my creatorwaiting, smiling. She was beyond pleased how quickly I’d mastered transforming from mist to human form. Taking my hand we hunted as one, two vampires seeking their prey. As we approached the square, I began to salivate. For the smell of human blood as it pumped through their veins was exhilarating.

Piercing my thoughts, Kara whispered, “This is your final test. Now take control of her mind Lucian and call the young woman toward you. Then mask reality and feed—but do not drain her! Remember what I taught you… we do not kill to survive for there is no need.”

Ravished, I felt my teeth lengthen. Drawing in a breath, I wrapped the woman within my arms, easing her fear with a soothing kiss. My hunger intensified I sank my fangs deep into her flesh. As the warm liquid coated my throat, the burning within began to subside. Fighting my inner self to calm the beast, I took only what I needed then closed the wound with my healing tongue. Sensing Kara’s approval I smiled relieved, I did not disappoint her. Once both our hunger satisfied, we strolled beneath the moonlit sky. Again, I asked why she had chosen me, why not another. For I was an Earl from birth, my father’s first born and this existence dishonored the Monroe name—my country. The vampire glanced up at me with sorrow filled eyes, her thoughts unmasked. The sorrow within was not for turning me into one of the undead—but for all of mankind...

After Kara became one with the night, I sit alone in this darkened crypt—waiting for the sleep of the dead to claim me—yet again. How, I yearn to visit—Monroe Castle. Yearn for my mother’s smile, my sister’s laughter. Three full moons have passed over the earth since the night, I was made a vampire. Damn you to the devil Kara, you had no right to claim this soul! My loyalty will forever be to England and my family. And by God, I shall find a way to live among them as the creature you turned me into—

Lucian Monroe~
