For Love of a Brystile Witch by Kaye Spencer #shortstory #westernromance

It will take more than a hanging to end a 200-year-old curse...

For Love of a Brystile Witch was first published in the Prairie Rose Publications' Cowboys, Creatures, & Calico, Vol. 2 anthology, and it is available now as a single-sell release.

Here's the story behind the story...

What if a woman hanged as a witch in 1692 New England put a death curse on the hanging judge and a curse of sorrow on the women of the Brystile line in the moments before she was hanged? Then what if, 200 years after the hanging, fate brought together the last living woman from the witch's family and the last man from the judge's family to break the curse? What if love and forgiveness will end the curse? Add the time factor that these two strangers have only a month to right this 200-year-old wrong before time runs out for both families, but only one of them knows it, and I had the basic premise for this story.

Excerpt

Reid needed no urging to mount the steps and, in spite of herself, Mercy kept watching. He ascended with an easy gait, the ball of each polished boot touching lightly upon the next plank. Once on the platform, he turned toward the crowd, head bowed and hat brim throwing a shadow over his features. Sheriff Samuel Dunne and Axel Moser, the valley’s minister of twenty some years stood on either side of the condemned man, and the deputies took watchful positions behind them and off the trap door...

The sheriff’s voice rose above the crowd’s murmurings. “If you have any last words, speak them now.”

For the longest time, Reid didn’t move. The quiet in the street became quieter. A baby cried; a woman shushed it. The autumn breeze ceased blowing. Mercy held her breath, entranced by the scene playing out before her. When he lifted his chin, she sucked in a little gasp of pity. His eyes—such sadness—maybe it was regret. Whatever his pain, it was deeper than the prospect of leaving this life in a few minutes. Did he deserve to die like this? Alone? With no one here to mourn his passing? Certainly, she didn’t know, but she blinked away tears for him nonetheless.

His deep voice resonated through the silent streets. “I hold the world, but as the world…a stage where every man must play a part. And mine is a sad one.”

A gasp of sorrow at his utter hopelessness left Mercy’s lips and, as if he’d heard, he caught her gaze with his, holding it in a way that made her feel he was memorizing her face as the last tender sight he’d take with him to the grave.

Sheriff Dunne waited a few seconds for the man to say more. When nothing came, he addressed the crowd. “As the duly appointed legal authority in Dulcet Valley, I hereby declare this hanging to proceed this first day of October 1892. The condemned will hang by the neck until dead, and his body will be interred in the local cemetery with a gravestone bearing his name, birth, and death dates. As per his signed and witnessed last requests, his epitaph will read, Teach me to feel another’s woe. Reverend Moser will settle his debts and notify next of kin.”

Those words—

She knew the poem and went on in her head with the next lines…to hide the fault I see / that mercy I to others show / that mercy show to me. It was strange that the word mercy, her given name, would show up in duplicate at this moment. Two of any one thing meant balance, partnership or opposites, either way it meant a pairing of something. Since coincidences didn’t exist in her world, Fate was at work here. She swept a hurried glance around the area, searching for other signs she’d overlooked.

“Let it be known the Honorable Judge J. A. Swanson has authorized me to accept a plea of innocent and commute the death sentence.” He leveled a hard gaze on the condemned man. “Reid Leighton Corvane, this is your last chance to save your own life.”

“What? A Corvane? Here?” The words burst forth, loud and unbidden. Jolted, stunned to her bones, Mercy grabbed a better hold on the branch to keep her seat. So her months of conjuring had proven fruitful after all.

Black Cats and Witches by Guest Blogger Tara Lain

Please welcome Tara Lain to NN! We are so excited to have you!

Happy Halloween! I’m delighted to be a guest here at Nocturnal Nights and thank Tabitha so much for inviting me. Since it’s the spookiest day of the year, let’s talk about witches and black cats. I just completed an LGBT paranormal novel called Brush with Catastrophe. It’s the sequel to the very popular paranormal novel, Spell Cat. Both books are about witches--very contemporary witches who live in New York City and go to college there. One of the key characters in both books is a black cat named Aloysius. In fact, the series is called The Aloysius Tales.

Black cats have been connected with witches from the time of the middle ages and before. Black cats have so many myths and legends associated with them it could fill books. It’s lucky to dream of one but unlucky to have one cross your path. If a black cat lies on the bed of a sick person they will die, but a strange black cat found on the porch brings prosperity. It was largely in the Middle Ages that the black cat became associated with evil. Because cats are nocturnal and roam at night, they were believed to be supernatural servants of witches, or even witches themselves.

In Brush with Catastrophe, my black cat is indeed a witches’ familiar. His name is Aloysius and he is very powerful but can only use that power to magnify the power of the witch to whom he is bound. Aloysius is the familiar of Killian Barth, the most powerful male witch in ten generations and the Witch Master, but early in our story he attaches himself to Sammy Raphael, a young witch with np perceptible power except prophetic painting. Occasionally, he paints something in the middle of the night and what he paints comes true. But his paintings always seem to be insignificant -- until he paints a picture of a beautiful man and it turns out to be his best freidn Ryder whom Sammy has secretly loved for years. Ryder, however, has changed so much over the summer vacation that he’s almost unrecognizable. And yet, he’s human, not a witch. And then Sammy paints an angel--who turns out to be a witch and a student at Sammy’s college. But that angel may just be a devil! And Sammy could end up having to save a lot of the people he loves from that devil! Aloysius always backs a winner. Why is he backing Sammy?

I loved writing this book. Because it’s contemporary I got to maintain the laws of the natural world and then allow my witches to violate them a bit. It was fun to ask what the world would be like if there were witches that appeared to be mere humans but with more power. And inBrush with Catastrophe, we learn that they are very much among us. Muwhahahahahha.

Brush with Catastrophe:

College art student Sammy Raphael is a crappy witch. And he can't get a
boyfriend. Sammy's had a passion for his BFF, Ryder McMasters, for years, but Ryder is straight and human. Talk about hopeless causes! And where other supernaturals can bring down lightning and manifest wealth, all Sammy can do is paint. True, the "prophetic" paintings he does at night always come true, but they never predict anything important -- until he paints a picture of a gorgeous man who turns out to be Ryder but so changed he's barely recognizable. Then Sammy paints an angel --who turns out to be a devil that threatens Sammy's community and the man he loves. With the black cat familiar, Aloysius, at his side, Sammy steps up to save the world--with a paint brush.

Spell Cat:

When Killian Barth, history professor, meets Blaine Genneau, quantum
physicist, they ignite their own big bang. But sadly, Killian walks away
because he doesn't do physics professors. In fact, he doesn't do humans,
because Killian is the most powerful male witch in 10 generations and,
though gay, he's expected to save his declining race by reproducing. Sex
with humans depletes his power he's been taught. Then why can young human, Jimmy Janx, dissolve spoons with a thought? Somebody's a lying witch. With his powerful cat familiar, Aloysius, on his shoulder, Killian brings the lightning against deceit and greed to save Blaine from danger and prove love is the greatest power of them all.

Michelle Clay and her Darker Nature

Welcome Michelle Clay to the blog!

Thank you for having me on your blog today! J

Tell us about your current release.  I’d love to! Of A Darker Nature released June 1st with Crescent Moon Press. It’s about a necro-telepath who is being hunted by an evil witch and falls in love with the vampire sent to protect her. To date, it’s my favorite novel and I do plan on writing a sequel.

Do you believe in ghosts?  Yes, I do, sort of. I believe remnants of those we love and lost cling to us and manifest in the form of memories or wishful thinking. Last summer I was very, very ill. I’m talking about I seriously thought I was going to die. My mom who had been gone about three years at that time was there, touched my hip, said my name in that calming mom way and I knew everything was going to be okay. I didn’t see her, but the touch and voice was so haunting. How’s that for a rambling, roundabout answer? J

Plotter or Pantser? Why? Ha. I begin with a half-cooked idea and it may or may not be the beginning. From there, I just fly by the seat of my pants. I’ve tried plotting and while I can adhere to it fairly well, eventually I veer off the path and go in a different direction. Pantser, for sure!!

How do you develop your plots and your characters? Do you use any set formula? I do actually develop and think out my characters. This is going to sound a bit crazy, but the leads are usually already bumping around my head for a bit, making themselves known. I make up a character sheet with everything from physical and emotional attributes down to what their fave color is. Plotting, is a whole ‘nother story… I just let the characters tell me where they want to go.

What hobbies do you actively pursue? I make OOAK (one of a kind)horror art dolls and “normal” crafty things. The dolls I make can be found here: http://darklingdolls.blogspot.com/p/about-darkling-dolls.html

Of A Darker Nature Blurb:
With just one touch, Emily Cross can read the memories of the deceased. Working at a funeral home might not be the logical choice, but for Emily, it is a natural one. When she and her boss are attacked, the creatures she once thought were only folklore become all too real. Just as she’s about to be drained of life, the cadaver on the next table rises and fights them off. Feeling a connection to the man who saved her life, she makes it her mission to find him. As she delves deeper, she discovers a dark underworld full of vampires, magic and shape shifters.

Marcus Dane doesn’t know how he ended up in a mortuary. As an Enforcer for the Mistress of the City, he has been following leads regarding a powerful witch who wants to exterminate his blood-clan. His fear that the witch has recruited some of his fellow Enforcers is confirmed and now it looks as though the witch will make her threats real. He counts himself lucky to escape the mortician, because someone in the mortuary business disposes of vampires who are unfortunate enough to cross his table.

When it all comes down to it, Emily now has a vampire she’s romantically entangled with, a very angry Mistress who doesn’t like other people playing with her toys, and an incredibly powerful witch who realizes killing Emily is the gateway to what she wants. By the end, Emily will have to figure out who she can trust, who she has to align with even if she doesn’t trust them, and just who has the darkest nature of all.

Excerpt:
Marcus turned his gaze up to her, eyes dark pools of midnight. The points of his fangs dimpled the tender flesh and blood welled just below the surface. Panic took over and she shoved him backward. She scooted off the counter, pulling the shirt back over her shoulders. "Things are moving way too fast. I shouldn't have let you go that far."

He watched her with scary, dark eyes.

"Why don't I run to town and get you some more blood?"

He grinned, fangs in full view. "I'm more interested in yours."

She shrieked then darted past him. A piece of glass crunched beneath her heel and sent her stumbling.

Marcus gripped her shoulders, drew her against him and pinned her against the refrigerator. He didn't seem to notice or care that she pushed against his chest in an effort to escape.

His mouth lingered just inches from her neck. The tips of his teeth grazed her throat and his breath tickled across her
skin. Fangs pinched the delicate area, forcing a low moan from her.

"Please, Marcus." She struggled to be heard over the roaring fear in her head. "Don't do this."

"Why must you torment me?" His lips tickled her skin.

Emily swallowed hard, afraid to move. Marcus's desire still pressed against her and her own swirled low in her belly. His fingers deftly unbuttoned her shorts. She was tempted to throw caution to the wind and let him ravage her. But she had no assurances that he wouldn't bleed her dry.

His hands were at her hips, pushing the denim lower. Next, his fingers hooked her
panties. She shuddered against his cool skin and held her breath. He hadn't backed away and his mouth was still at her throat.

"Marcus?" She was afraid to move or do more than whisper. This was unfamiliar territory and she didn't know what might set him off. Sex she could handle, but the fangs at her throat were terrifying.

He surprised her by drawing back. Doubt surfaced behind his darkened eyes, but he didn't take his gaze from her. In a roughened voice he said, "Walk away, don't run."

Bio:
Even as a child, Michelle wasn’t afraid of the things that went bump in the night. In fact, the thought of a world where werewolves roamed and Dracula reigned king may seem like an eldritch dream to most, but was exciting to Michelle. Instead of turning on a light for comfort, she reveled in the dark, imagining the lives of what was out there roaming the night and frightening those who didn’t truly appreciate how interesting the supernatural really were.

Nowadays, her visions continuously take shape as she brings life to the worlds she has imagined since childhood. The wild imaginings that often got Michelle out of, or more often into, trouble as a young girl have informed and enriched her storytelling as an adult, bringing a fresh new voice to the paranormal romance genre.
