Interview of erotic romance author Berengaria Brown

Your characters come to life in your books. Do you feel each of your characters lives with you as you write? Do their lives sometimes take over a part of your life? Can you name an example?
My characters arrive in my head and start talking to me. I don’t start writing until I understand what they want me to do with them. And things do surprise me on the way. A couple years ago I was writing the “Forever Yours” series. All three books are set in the Smith Tower office and apartment building. The first two books have a ghost in them and naively I assumed book three would as well. But while I was still writing book 2 one of the minor characters interrupted me and said, “I’m a vampire. When are you going to write my story?” By the time I’d cleaned up the coffee I’d spat on my screen and gotten my breath back he was busy telling me I should have known that already because of his name. So I googled his name and well… the rest is in “Eternity”.

Ready to shine? Tell us the name of your book.
Sunshine Yellow Days (MM) The Paint Store Boys Book 1

Edward Robinson is a failure, nervous, frightened, bullied, and unemployed. Basil King, a flamboyantly gay interior designer, sees the man behind the pain. He has designs on Ed. Basil is one of the owners of The Paint Store, along with Cuthbert, Roland, and Max, and he offers Ed a job there. As Ed settles in and enjoys the work, Basil invites him out to a gay bar for a drink.
Ed has tried so hard to fit in, to be invisible, to be ignored. Someone who looks and dresses as outrageously as Basil, yet without being hated, is an inspiration to him. Not that he could ever look or act like that. But maybe working for Basil and his friends will help him get some self-confidence so he can begin to reclaim his life and his self-respect. When Basil wants to date him he can’t believe anyone would care for a person like him. But he accepts the date anyway.

ADULT EXCERPT

As soon as the band returned to the stage he took Edward out onto the dance floor and held him tightly. Edward was only a few inches shorter than him, and once he took his boots off, likely they’d be the same height. He liked that they were so evenly matched. Everything would line up perfectly in bed.
He gripped Edward’s ass, massaging his tight little butt cheeks as they danced, and deliberately brushed his body over that lovely rigid dick. So many delights soon to be unwrapped. When the music ended he asked, “Is your car just in the parking lot here? Can you follow me to my condo?”
“Yes and yes.”
Basil held Edward’s hand as they walked to his car. “Mine’s the candy-apple red Ford over there,” he said.
“I might have guessed it wouldn’t be white or silver,” said Edward.
Basil laughed. Already Edward was showing his sense of humor and coming out from behind that wall where he hid his personality. “Wait until you see my condo. You’ll love it.”
“I do like our uniform. It’s wild, but—I don’t know, friendly and welcoming perhaps, as well as appropriate.”
Basil hugged him. “I knew you were perfect for me. You see beneath the surface to what is really there. Hurry up and get in your car.”
As soon as he slid into the driver’s seat of his car, Basil unzipped his skin-tight black jeans and released the pressure on his dick. Fuck, he hadn’t been this hard before. His poor shaft was getting strangled in there. He screeched his tires leaving his parking space and drove to the exit. Edward was already there, waiting back a bit so Basil could lead the way. Basil waved at his soon-to-be lover and zipped out of the driveway. He made sure Edward was right behind him before merging with the traffic. He longed to plant his boot hard on the accelerator and race home, but a speeding ticket would spoil the atmosphere of the day. Besides, he didn’t want to lose Edward and he was almost certain the man would refuse to disobey the speed limit. Well, one thing at a time. Bed was first.
He parked where there were two vacant spaces side by side and took the visitor card out of the glove compartment of his car, then locked his car and handed the laminated card to Edward. “Display that on your dashboard.” Edward turned it over in his hand curiously, and did as Basil had said, before following him into the building.
Basil was aching to get Edward into his condo. He was in so much of a hurry it’d been a struggle to zip up his jeans. But he’d take them off again real soon. He tapped his feet while they waited for the elevator, and was relieved it was empty when it finally arrived. “Soon, soon, soon,” he told himself as it rose slowly to the tenth floor.
He almost ran down the hallway to his condo, flinging open the door, urging Edward inside and then slamming him against the wall to claim his lips. Gods the man tasted delicious. Basil leaned his poor aching dick hard against Edward’s cock, and ground his hips as he jammed his tongue into Edward’s mouth. Edward responded by tilting his lips so their noses weren’t mashed together, and lightly moving his own tongue into Basil’s mouth.
Basil kept his dick rammed hard against Edward’s, and fisted the blond’s hair, realigning their mouths to plunge his tongue still deeper into Edward’s mouth. Their chins rubbed together and he felt the faintest rasp of beard against his chin. Edward was so blond even with their faces mashed together Basil could barely see the beginning growth of his beard, but his skin could feel it and he loved the hint of roughness.
“Bedroom, now,” he ordered, grabbing Edward’s hand and practically dragging the man down the hallway to his bedroom. He’d spent a hell of a lot of time and money making this room perfect. It had to express him as he truly was. Not only the flashier outer appearance, but the true depths of his personality in all its many layers. But this wasn’t the time to talk colors and designs. It was time to fuck.
He pushed Edward onto the bed and kneeled over him, hastily unbuttoning his shirt, and unzipping his dress pants. Helpfully Edward kicked his shoes off, and wiggled his ass so the dress pants slid smoothly down his legs. Basil tugged them off and then stripped his own clothing off as fast as he could finally clambering up on top of Edward and taking possession of his mouth again. This time they kissed more slowly, but it was even more erotic with them skin to skin and their cocks pressing together.
He held Edward’s face in his hands and looked deeply into his pale blue eyes. “First we’ll take the edge off, and then we’ll fuck slowly, carefully, and thoroughly. You okay with the plan?”
“Hell, yes.”
Basil sat up and pulled Edward up until Edward was almost on his knee, their cocks together again. He wrapped both his hands around both cocks and began fisting them together. Edward just stared at him and gasped.
“Hot eh?”
“Fuck yes. Let me help.”
The moment Edward’s cool hands reached his dick, Basil almost came. Edward’s touch was light and gentle, almost teasing, but fiercely erotic as well. Just the fact that his dick was rubbing against Edward’s was enough to keep him on edge, but they were both in too much need to waste time. One after the other they fisted their joined dicks until they were both breathing heavily.
“I can’t. I’m going—”
“Let go, lover. Come now,” Basil ordered, giving the cocks an extra twist with his hands. Cum poured from Edward’s dick and Basil relaxed, spurting stream after stream of seed himself, the two lots of cum blending together over their joined hands, cocks, and bellies. Fuck, that was an erotic sight to see.
Once again he kissed Edward, pushing him flat on the bed and climbing over him, their mouths still joined. When they parted to breathe, Basil grinned at him. “That feels better. Now we can fuck properly.”

Are you working on anything right now, and can you tell us a teaser about these projects?
“Kissing His Man” the first book in The Bath House Boys series, released 25 October.
Frank Ashman’s lover left him seven months, three weeks, four days, two hours and twenty-eight minutes ago. At Pinky’s gay bar the server shows him a brochure featuring the facilities of a new gay bath house that’s just opened in town. There he meets Ralph Sellars. They explore the delights of the bath house together. There are the rainforest showers, the hot tubs, the sauna, the swimming pool, and the restaurant, not to mention the freedom brought by the lack of clothing on the members there. Oh yes, and the bedrooms upstairs, each one complete with a drawer full of toys.
But both Ralph and Frank are burdened with baggage from the past. Can they move on and make a new future together? Or is their relationship doomed to be just sex in the bath house instead of a genuine future together outside in the world?
There are three more pairs of men in “The Bath House Boys” and the books release at two week intervals. In each case at least one of the heroes has appeared in a previous book. Sometimes both of them have.

Tell us an important lesson, on the business side of publishing that you've learned on your journey.
Never act unprofessionally. Writing is a career and throwing a temper tantrum on the internet is not a good look. Fortunately I’d seen other authors torpedo their own careers, so when a publishing house I had some books with failed a few years ago I was able to remain silent on the internet, and save my screaming for the privacy of my own home. Since then, another company I write for has also experienced difficulties so once again I’m staying silent about life’s ups and downs.

What would you say is a true hero?
A true hero loves his man (or woman) no matter what. Everyone has bad days and better days, but that doesn’t change a real hero’s love for his man/woman.

How would you best describe your writing style?
I’m a very linear writer. I start at the beginning of a book and keep going until I reach the end. I can’t write scenes in advance of the story and I can’t write several books simultaneously. I begin writing knowing my characters, the beginning, the end, and a few points I need to hit along the journey. How we get from one to the next I never know until it happens.

If you could travel through time to visit a special time period or famous person, what or who would it be and why?
I love the medieval period. All those castles, wars, men with long swords…YUM! Throughout history women have had very few rights and in medieval times this was the same. But sometimes a smart and determined woman has managed to arrange her life in a way that suits her and that’s where there are stories to be told. However, I wouldn’t want to stay there too long. Chocolate hadn’t been invented yet. Nor had the internet or antibiotics.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career?
Keeping going through the ups and downs. I’ve had a handful of bestsellers, and I’ve had other books that are still selling slowly and steadily years later. I’ve had a publisher close while I still had one book I hadn’t managed to retrieve from them when it went down. But when someone says they read my book and liked it, that makes everything worthwhile.

Do you write every day?
I try to but like most authors I have a day job and a life outside of my computer so it doesn’t always happen. I travel quite a bit with the day job and sometimes end up places where there’s no internet or in situations where I can’t write. But mostly, I do write at least something every day.

Author Interview with S.J. McMillan

Good morning, good morning Nocturnal Nighters! Today I've got a guest for y'all. Let me introduce S.J. McMillan and her debut novel City of the Gods from Ruby Lioness Press!

What's your book/current WIP about?

My debut book just released in May this year. The title of the book is City of the Gods: The Descendant. It is the first book in a planned trilogy. The first book is about a human girl who discovers she is the only descendant of an ancient civilization. The Gods appoint her to right the wrongs that were done to her ancestors by an evil man.  She has three people, from the original civilization, sworn to protect and train her until she is able to defeat the evil.
I’m working on the second book of the trilogy now. The focus shifts to another character, almost all of the characters from the first book are returning for the second book.  My plan, fingers crossed, is to have it to the publisher in a few weeks.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
When I was writing the first book I emailed both Christine Feehan and Lynsay Sands for advice. They were both nice enough to respond and gave me some excellent advice. I’ve even had the pleasure of chatting with Ms. Sands via Twitter. These are just a couple of the writers I look up to, and hope to achieve even a small portion of the success that they have.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I learned about places I had never heard of before, places that I would now like to visit one day. The mystery surrounding the creation and demise of Teotihuacan, Mexico was very interesting to me. I want to go down there and explore the pyramids firsthand.  I also learned a lot about the Mayan and Aztec civilizations, especially since I started writing the second book.

Have ever considered writing a different genre than urban fantasy?

Once I’m finished with the City of the Gods trilogy, I have a few more ideas planned out. The next book will most likely be a stand-alone and rides along the urban fantasy/paranormal line. I would love to try writing a horror novel, and maybe even a steampunk. Ideas are constantly revolving around in this brain of mine. I also get interesting ideas from my husband. The possibilities are endless, so more than likely in the future, you will see something different come out of me.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

The actions scenes are my favorite part to write. You get to see a different side of the characters and their personalities also come shining through in the heat of battle. The other, more selfish reason I like writing the figt scenes is because I can get my husband involved in them. He helps me plan out a scene and we actually act it out in the living room with our kids’ toys. It is really fun, but we do take it seriously. One day I’m going to have to record it and post it for readers to watch. Believe me, you’ll get a good laugh.

Describe your writing in a sentence.

I really suck at this kind of stuff. It’s like an interviewer asking me to describe myself in three words or less. I can’t do that either. So here is goes, but be warned, it’s going to be lame.

My writing is AWESOME! (LOL)

What's your next project?

As I mentioned before I’m currently working on the second book of the City of the Gods trilogy. I will then start plugging away on the final book for the trilogy. It will be weird to finally finish this project, put these characters to rest, and work on something completely different with completely different characters and settings. Weird, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.

Interview of Lydia Michaels

Tell us about your writing. What type of stories do you like to write? Any character you like to write about? Any themes you find inspiring?

Plain and simple, I write LOVE stories with generous love scenes. I try my best to write stories that take readers on an emotional evolution and leave them breathless. My best know work is The Order of Vampyres, a Paranormal Romance series based on nine immortal families living as an Amish order. All of my books take place in present day, but I love the angst of historical romances. There is just something so appealing about all that virginal innocence and those politically incorrect males. I think that is what drew me to the Amish theme. Working with such a primitive setting provides me with a freedom to almost time travel between pages, jumping from modern day English communities to simplistic and antiquated Amish farms. The chemistry between an immortal Amish male and an independent mortal female is always an interesting cocktail. Although I do use poetic license keep my Amish Vampyres clean shaven with magnificent features, they typically follow most Amish laws.

What is your favorite part of the writing process? What are your most dreaded tasks? How do you get through the tough parts?

My favorite part is the actual writing. More than anything I dread the editing process. I am dyslexic so editing can become quite tedious. Luckily, I always have plenty of wine and chocolate on hand to get me through these more difficult tasks.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me starts at 4:30am, when everyone is still asleep and the house is quiet. I am dysfunctional without coffee, so that’s the first objective of every day. Once I have a hot mug in hand I am off to read my email and check any promotions I have going. Usually by my second cup of coffee my family is awake and I put aside my author hat and fasten on my supermom cape and ship my munchkin off to school (I’m really not the supermom type. I’m more a grown up Sue from The Middle meets a disheveled Martha Stewart). I then have six uninterrupted hours to write. When I am not writing I am doing the usual mom/wife things with the fam.

What author is your work most like? What author would you like to be more like?

This is a tricky question as I have no idea how my work is interpreted by others. I was once told by a fan that my “voice” is similar to Megan Harts. If I had to pick an author to be like, I would choose Lori Foster. She just seems so happy and satisfied with her life and career. She inspires me to never forget I, too, am living my dream.

What would you like readers to take away from your stories?

I was once told by a fan that finishing my books is like having to say goodbye to a best friend. That is exactly what I hope to give each reader, an experience comparable to the affection of a friend. I want to not only tell readers a story of love. I want them to fall in love right alongside the characters. I hope to give readers a story that is so touching it haunts their memories and is remembered fondly, never losing the ability to make them sigh.

What inspires you?

People. I love watching people and analyzing their foibles and strengths. My characters are usually amalgams of those who have passed through my life and inspired me in one way or another.

When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing a journal and it slowly became a book in 2008. I titled it Minster in my Closet and it is a never before told, true story based on my first relationship as a teenage girl, which was quite abusive. It is told from an adult woman’s perspective, reflecting back on a forgotten and terrifying time. Perhaps one day I will publish it. For now I only share the first line, Some people hide skeletons in their closets. I have a monster hidden in mine…

Do you have a specific writing style?

I love playing with words until even the description of a shoe sounds poetic. I love reading big, fat, juicy romances that are as rich in description and plot as they are sizzling in sex. I write what I love to read and my books are typically between 300-400 pages long.

Is there a message in your novels that you want readers to grasp?

I suppose, being that all my novels are centralized around love, I would hope that I am showing readers that love is not in word, but in deed and sometimes changing a flat tire can be more romantic than words, flowers, or diamonds.

Who’s your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

At the moment I would say my favorite author is JR Ward. The Warden tells stories in such an intricate way, I don’t believe there is anyone who writes quite like her. I love how long her books are, how eclectic her characters are, how she incorporates slang, humor, violence, and smoking sex all in one. Her books are not stories. They are experiences.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Yes, never give up! Manuscripts are like houses. They are never completely finished and never perfect. That’s why there are publishers. Publishing a book is the only way to stop an author from obsessing over every word. So until you find the right publisher for your work—improve, improve, improve!

What is your favorite comfort food?

Toasted multigrain bagel, cream cheese and an egg white. Don’t judge…it’s delicious.

What is your favorite guilty pleasure?

Dunkin Donuts coffee.

What is your favorite way to promote?

I prefer Facebook because it’s more personable and less formal. I love to interact with and getting to know my readers.

What is your favorite TV show? Why?

FRIENDS. I suppose because we all have a little of each character in us. I definitely have some Monica and Phoebe in me.

What current projects are you working on?

Currently, I am writing Destiny Calls, the third book in The Order of Vampyres. I have recently finished an Irish romance called Sacred Waters and I am also writing an erotic romance titled Breaking Perfect, which has a heat level far beyond anything I have ever written before. All of my published works can be found on my website atwww.LydiaMichaels.org and are available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Bookstrand, and other major retailers. My most recent release is Calling for a Miracle {Book 2} of The Order of Vampyres (March 29, 2012).

Isolated in the quiet hills of Pennsylvania is an Amish order unlike any other—they are vampyre.

After fleeing her oppressive marriage, Larissa Hartzler will give herself to no man, but Bishop Eleazar King has other plans. Eleazar is appalled when he discovers the always dutiful Larissa working in an English house of sin.

As the most respected immortal of The Order, Eleazar has always maintained unwavering control, but everything changes once he is called. His long standing position of authority is threatened when his need for his mate takes hold. There is nothing that will keep him from possessing the virginal Larissa as his mate. Not even her husband. Larissa’s fear of being found by Bishop King transforms into confusion when she learns he is her mate. Five times his minor and broken on so many emotional levels, Larissa knows she will be an inadequate mate for Eleazar. With gentle patience he begins to teach her what her husband never did, and slowly awakens Larissa’s desires

If you could be any paranormal creature, what would you be?

Carpathian Vampire. Christine Feehan’s Carpathians seem the have the coolest abilities of all the vampire books I have read. And I guess I would pick vampire over any other paranormal creature because they’re sexy as hell. Although Alcede from True Blood isn’t too shabby.

My interview with a VAMPIRE

If you've caught my past interviews, you know I keep them short and sweet, preferably two minutes or less.

But there's nothing sweet about my interview subject today. Nor is there a possibility of hammering it down to under a minute.

Please join me in welcoming Mel from Love's Prophecy to Nocturnal Nights.

Sheri: Thank you for agreeing to this interview Wow, this guys is freaking HUGE!!

Mel: *Sits forward and shakes Sheri's hand*

Hey, thanks for having me. Brenda has told me a lot about you. Says you've written quite the story yourself. Congratulations.

Sheri: *Blushes* Thank you. I'm a married woman. I'm a married woman. Do you eat food? 'Cause I brought some chocolate chip cookies.

Mel: *smiles* Yeah, vampires eat food. Forget all the crap you've heard. It's all bullshit—well most of it. And no, thank you. I'm not all that into chocolate or sweets.

Sheri: Damnit, I'm nervous! *Stuffs a cookie into my mouth, nervous eating habit.* Is it hard to live in a commune with all the other Slayers?

Mel: Sometimes. They can be a pain in the ass. My ex-roommate Kal drove me nuts half the time.

Sheri: Watching Mel shake his long hair back, a question comes to mind. Who trims your hair?

Mel: What? *laughs* You think I need a hair cut? *grabs a strand and eyes it* Maybe I should get a trim. I usually just hacked the ends off myself, but I'll ask Breeana if she can tidy it up a bit.

Sheri: OMG, shut up, Sheri! Before you piss-off a vampire! Deep breath – think calm. You're hair is fine, it's the reason I asked. I didn't know if vampire hair was different…or something. I'm such a freak. You've lived a long while. If you and Breeana could live in any time of history, which would it be and why?

Mel: *Glances away and clears his throat* Now. The past is the past. And I'd like to leave it where it belongs.

Sheri: *Sensing there are ghosts in the past that he's buried, I'll move on.* What's your favorite food?

Mel: *Laughs out loud* You know, Breeana asked me that same questions months back, and I told her she was my favorite food. But she wanted a serious answer, even though I was serious. So, I guess I'll say what I did then and go with spaghetti.

Sheri: Spaghetti? I would have thought steak tar-tar. Favorite drink?

Mel: Jack Daniels

Sheri: How is one nominated to be a Slayer? And are any vampires declined?

Mel: We're not nominated—it's more like a duty we're born to. We don't have much of a choice in the matter.

There are certain recruits who are declined. Mainly because they lack the physical strength to fight demons. But that's rare. We need all the help we can get. There's no shortage in demons.

Sheri: Scary thought about the demons. I see what he means about physical strength. This guy is built like a brick shithouse. Is there a ceremony when one becomes a Slayer, a special something to mark the occasion?

Mel: Years ago there was what you could call a ceremony performed by The Sacred Order, but that's changed over time. Now our young recruits go to basic training camps, much like humans. Upon graduation, the warriors receive a tattoo.

*Mel leans forward and shows Sheri the tattoo encircling his left bicep* See this symbol here? This shows what clan you're from.

*He traces the black swirls* I'm from the 26th clan. And this here is the oath we take. *He smirks* Says a lot of poetic crap, but basically it says to serve and protect mankind until death takes thee.

Sheri: Holy crap! That's the biggest, beefiest bicep I've ever seen. Damn, that Breeana is one lucky chick. Mel, I'm impressed. So much information packed in one spot. It's sorta like a vampire dog-tag, huh? Has there ever been a rogue Slayer?

Mel: Yep. We have jails, just like humans, and our jails are full. Life is hard and it seems to bring out the worst in some people—humans and vampires. The fucking demons don't help—*face turns red* Sorry for the language. I'll try to keep it clean.

Sheri: *Chuckles* That's all right. I don't have virgin ears. Okay – Best and worst time. What was the best day of your life?

Mel: You really have to ask? It was the day I met Breeana.

Sheri: How sweet! And the worst?

Mel: The day the demon-bitch snagged Breeana. Shit, I can't even think of that night…yeah, next question, please.

Sheri: *Notices clenched fist the size of a sledge hammer* Absolutely, we'll move on. Any last words?

Mel: Yeah. Brenda wanted me to tell everyone to buy her book. *laughs*

Sheri: *Laughing* I'd like to thank Brenda Dyer for interceding on my behalf and allowing me this interview. And a huge thanks to Mel, for finding time tonight to drop by and answer my questions.

Mel: Thank you for having me. *glances at his wristwatch* I better get going—I have to meet Kal at The Green Tree soon, but I want to stop at home and see Breeana before I head out hunting. *Shakes Sheri's hand again*

Brenda: Bye Mel. Say hi to Bree and Kal for me. Oh, and tell Kal he needs to stop by tomorrow so we can go over a scene he emailed me the other day. I need to ask him to clarify a few things.

Mel: Will do. Later, ladies.

Brenda: *Brenda smiles at Sheri* So, what did ya think of Mel?

Sheri: OMG, Brenda! You weren't shitting me! He's great!

Brenda: Gorgeous isn't he? He was a little nervous for this interview but I told him you wouldn't ask him anything that would make him uncomfortable. Thanks for that by the way. And thanks for having us on your blog.

Sheri: I could have cut my tongue out on a few questions. Thought he was going to be pissed at me. Thanks so much for stopping by. I sure miss our talks, but I CAN'T WAIT for your next book! *claps hands* Can you give us a hint at what's to come?

Brenda: The next book as you may have guessed is about Kal. It's called Prophecy's Child. You got a taste of Kal's personality in Love's Prophecy, and he comes across as pretty happy-go-lucky, but he has a lot of emotional baggage he's kept hidden. Even from his best friend, Mel.

Kal isn't as happy as he likes to make out. He has regrets and he will come face to face with them in his story.

I can't thank you enough for stopping by today. I want everyone to be sure and grab a copy of LOVE'S PROPHECY. It's paranormal in a class all its own.

Dark warriors of might...

Mel is a vampire warrior sworn to hunt and kill demons in the dark streets of Vancouver. But he's burdened with a new assignment: find the meaning behind the Vampire Prophecy. Having no faith in the gods and their empty words, he believes there's no truth to the ancient legend until he meets Breeana, a human woman who bears the mark of the prophecy and resembles the mysterious woman haunting his dreams. When a vengeful demon spies Breeana in his arms, she is marked for death. He must take her from the world she knows until he can eliminate the threat. But the real danger is the role Breeana must play in fulfilling the prophecy and the intense feelings she brings out in him. Mel is forced to choose between his obligations to his kind, the world, and the woman he loves. Does he have the courage to let the one woman who could heal his wounded heart and soul go, or will he risk her life and bind her to him for all eternity?

Small warriors of light...

Veterinarian, Dr. Breeana Spencer yearns for love and companionship, but the disappointment of failed relationships has left her bitter. She now finds solace in romance novels. But when she meets a mysterious stranger, she's drawn to him by a connection so forceful it shatters all reason, leaving her incapable of resisting him. Yet there's more to him than smoldering good looks and a rock-hard body. As she's drawn deeper into his danger-filled world, she learns she's part of an ancient vampire legend. Breeana fears her future is no longer hers and will not include Mel. As their enemies close in, desperate to destroy them both, she must fight to convince Mel her place is at his side. EXCERPT

Once inside the bedroom, Mel closed the door as Breeana sat on the edge of the bed. He paced in front of the dresser.

“Mel, I need to ask you—”

“Please, let me go first.” His mouth opened, and then closed several times. He cursed and continued pacing.

Breeana's hands gripped the comforter. “Just tell me for Christ sakes. Your silence is scaring me.”

He came to a stop directly in front of her. “I'm taking you home tonight.”

Her heart slowed to a crawl. What do you mean? Why are you sending me home?”

He crouched and rested his hands on her knees. “Kal killed the she-demon last night so it's safe for you to return home.”

Now it made sense why Mel was so upset and why Kal had sounded like he was saying good-bye to her—because he was.

Tears welled in her eyes and she gripped his forearms. “I don't want to leave. I love you. I…please.” A tight knot formed in her throat. She swallowed, trying to relieve the pressure. “Please, don't end this. I beg you.”

“Breeana.” He sighed, and wiped away her tears with the pads of his thumbs. “You have to go back. We've discussed this before. You know why it has to end.”

“No, it doesn't. You said you love me, and I love you, so please, Mel, please—”

He straightened and raked his hair off his forehead. “I do love you. God, I love you so damn much this is killing me, but I won't have you leave everything for me.”

She jumped up, wrapping her arms around him. “I don't care about all that. I love you more than anything my old life has to offer. Don't you understand?”

“You say that now, but eventually you'll change your mind. You could never go back to your old life. Over time you would come to hate me for it.”

She stepped back so he could see her face and know what she said was the truth. “I would never regret my decision to stay with you. Never.”

He framed her damp face with his calloused palms. “I won't prolong your life.”

A shadow of doubt flashed through her mind but she cut it off, discarding it quicker than she'd drop a poisonous snake. Besides, in time he'd change his mind, she was sure of it. “I don't care. I still want to stay.”

His silver-gray eyes bore deep into hers, then sadness crept across his face. After a few moments, he turned away. “I won't change my mind,” he stated more to himself. “You may not understand, but I do this because I love you so much.”

Anger and pain coiled around her heart. She clenched her fists. Rage and frustration mounted and streamed through her, hot as lava. “You do this because you love me?” She jumped at him, grabbing the front of his shirt, balling it up in her fists. “You break my heart into a million fucking pieces and you have the gall to say you do so because you love me?”

“Yes. Believe it or not, it's the truth.”

Breeana shoved him and stumbled backwards. “Don't…you…dare say it's because you love me!” Tears flowed unchecked down her cheeks, dripping off her chin. “How dare you try to justify your actions by sugar-coating them with words of love.” Her voice rose as hysteria and madness took over her heart and mind.

“I'm doing this for your own good!” he shouted back.

“My own good? No you're not. You're doing this for your own good.” Her eyes widened. “Oh…my God. You never loved me.”

“How can you say that—”

“If you did, you wouldn't be able to imagine a second without me, so—go to hell!” She jabbed a finger toward the door, her body vibrating with unrestrained rage and pain. “Get out.”

Mel grabbed her arm, but she jerked it from his grasp. “Breeana, you're better off without me. Please try to understand. This isn't easy for me either.”

Madness completely took over and she spun away, screaming, “Don't touch me! Just…leave so I can pack.” She marched across the room to the closet and grabbed her bag.

“Breeana, please listen to me.” He tried to stop her by stepping in her way, but she stalked around him, grabbing her clothes along the way, shoving them into the bag.

On her way to the bathroom, she stopped and glanced at him over her shoulder. He stood in the middle of the room, his face a mask of hurt and pain. “You're right about one thing, I do hate you. I hate you for breaking my heart. I hate you for deceiving me, but most of all, I hate you because you're a coward.” The last one was low but she really didn't give a shit. She wanted to hurt him. Wanted him to feel as miserable and dead inside as she did.

“If you believe nothing else, believe that I love you and always will.” He took a cautious step toward her but she backed away, holding up one hand.

“Don't.” She sniffed. “I can't—I won't listen to any more of your lies.” She brushed at her damp cheeks. “God, I'm pathetic. I was really sucked in by you, wasn't I? Did you have a good laugh at my expense? This silly little human woman falling for all your bullshit. Well, I see you now for what you really are.”

He launched at her and grabbed her arms, hauling her against his chest. “Don't you dare. I never lied to you.”

She tore from his grip, her breath coming in shallow gasps. “You're right, you didn't lie. I guess I was just a fool and an idiot. I was hoping our love would be enough, but obviously not. Though I maybe be an idiot, but at least I'm not a coward.” She squeezed her eyes shut, blocking out the hurt and anger on his face. “You're so afraid to take a chance on love because of what-ifs. You're so worried that something will go wrong that you opt to throw it away first. And if you think so little of yourself that you feel you don't deserve love, then you are more messed up than I thought.”

Mel backed away from her until the backs of his thighs hit the bed. He sagged down. His eyes were slits of glittering silver riveted on her face. In a barren voice he said, “If you need to hurt me, go ahead, I deserve it, but never question why I'm doing this or that I love you. I do this only to keep you safe.”

“If I hear that excuse one more time, I'm going to scream. You do this to keep yourself safe. You never even gave me a choice. You made the decisions for me. You decided I would come to hate you, not me. You decided I'd be better off without you, not me. So, please, get out and let me pack.”

Breeana slammed and locked the bathroom door. How am I going to get through this? How can I live without him, loving him as much as I do?

Her legs gave out and her back slid slowly down the door. Covering her face with her hands, she cried, terrified she'd never be able to stop.
