My favorite book

I was recently asked to blog about my favorite book of all the stories I’ve written. It was very difficult indeed. I’ve written over one hundred stories. How could I possibly choose just one?

Obviously my first published book is very close to my heart. After all, no one ever forgets their first. That’s “Intensity” an MMF ménage. It became the first book in a trilogy published by Siren.

http://www.bookstrand.com/intensity

But after much thought I decided that even though it’s very special because it was my first, it’s not my favorite.

As my bio explains, I write all different kinds of romance, whatever genre and pairing of characters that they demand. “The Paint Store Boys” books are all MM, contemporary, whereas some of my series have different pairings within them because that’s what the characters wanted. So that makes this series special.
But what makes “Sunshine Yellow Days” my favorite (although a good momma never admits she has a favorite) is that Basil is such an outrageously flamboyant person, and Edward is so quiet and self effacing.

Edward is a nervous, frightened, failure who tries very hard to be ignored and to remain invisible. The word “invisible” isn’t even in Basil’s vocabulary. From the top of his green and purple hair, to the soles of his tap-dancing, bright red leather boots, he is front and center of the stage all the time and no one could possibly fail to see him. Their romance is very, very precious indeed.

Reminiscing.

On April 21 it was five years since Siren published my first erotic romance, “Intensity”. On 1 June my second erotic romance was released at a different publisher and in July I had an MF romance debut at a third publisher. Then in September my second erotic ménage was released by Siren. After five years publishing erotic romance I’m very aware that almost none of the authors I knew then are still writing. Or if they are, they’re using names I don’t recognize.

Today I have 110 unique titles published, not counting ones I’ve gotten the rights back to and self-published or made into anthologies, and not counting print books or audio books of ebooks. Five of the publishers I’ve been with have closed or I’ve no longer wanted to be associated with them. All but once I managed to get all my rights back in time. I’m still very happy writing for three different publishers, as well as doing some indi publishing.

Being part of the Naughty Literati is a new type of venture for me. I’ve self published some old books out of contract for which I’ve gotten my rights back. Some of them I even made into anthologies of similar kinds of books. I have one of male/male romances and another of lesbian romances for example.

I’ve written a story for each of the Naughty Literati’s boxed sets so far. A ménage for Naughty List, “Jewel’s Ménage Christmas”, and MM stories for the next three. “Chocolate-Coated Reunion” for Naughty Hearts, “The Loch Ness Monster, Romeo and Julio” for Naughty Flings, and “Fireworks at the Lake” for Naughty Escapes.
I enjoy reading across a range of genres so that’s the way I write as well, across genres.

Here’s an excerpt from “The Loch Ness Monster, Romeo and Julio,” my story in "Naughty Flings".

Cam staggered out of bed and into the shower when his alarm went off. He spent the first five minutes wondering whether or not he was crazy to be up so early in the hopes of seeing Nessie, but then he remembered he only had two opportunities to do this, today and tomorrow.
“Come on, man up, princess. How likely is it that Zeke’s will ever send you to Europe again? It’s now or never.”
He dressed and raced out to the parking lot, wondering if Fraser really would be there. He’d truly enjoyed Fraser’s companionship. There were so many other people Zeke’s could have sent with him who wouldn’t have been nearly as easy-going and pleasant travel companions as Fraser. The problem was that he’d like to kiss and hug Fraser, to hold him close and maybe go to bed with him. Which would be a disaster because of his family’s response to him associating with a Campbell.
Cameron sighed. He’d never forgotten the look on his grandmother’s face all those years ago when his older sister had innocently announced the name of the little girl who’d invited her to a birthday party.
“Fiona Campbell? StellaBeth MacDonald, you’ll not be attending any such thing. Only over my dead body will a MacDonald ever be in the same room as a Campbell.”
“But it’s a birthday party, Grandma.”
“Who’s to say the food they give you won’t be poisoned. Never trust a Campbell, girl.”
The thought that the food might be poisoned had silenced his sister, and himself. He and StellaBeth were teenagers before he realized most people no longer even knew about the Glencoe massacre, nor cared about family feuds. But forming a sexual relationship with Fraser wasn’t possible and he’d never mentioned the man’s name to his family.
Fraser was leaning against their rented powder blue Honda, holding two steaming take-out cups. At first he’d thought the car was rather small, but having negotiated so many narrow roads, he’d quickly been glad it wasn’t any bigger.
Cam couldn’t help the smile that broke out over his face as he saw Fraser’s bright red hair and cheeky grin.
“Thanks for the coffee.”
“What makes you think one of these is for you? I’ll likely need both of them just to wake up so early.”
Cam laughed. Dammit every time Fraser opened his mouth he fell a little deeper into love with him.

New Year, Two New Books!

"Forty-Nine Shades are Close Enough" MF

Blurb: Audrey has no trouble achieving orgasms alone in her bed at night reading erotic romance novels even though her relationship with Joe ended quickly when she failed to be aroused by sex with him.
Now she is madly in lust with a truly delicious work colleague, Yanni. She is delirious with joy when he invites her out to dinner, but when they go to bed and he kisses her breasts, nothing happens. Despite her lust for him her body refuses to be aroused.
Audrey is devastated and so is Yanni. He’s determined to romance her until her body cooperates.

WARNING!! PG13 Excerpt

Yanni picked up the TV remote and flicked through the channels until he came to a romance movie, which he left on with the sound turned low. Then he turned her face to his and kissed her softly, just the briefest touch of his lips to hers.
She cuddled into him, so he feathered kisses on her nose, eyebrows, and across her jawline, and then sucked her earlobe into his mouth.
“Mmm,” she murmured, resting her palms against his chest.
Yanni tilted Audrey’s mouth up to his and kissed her more deeply. When he licked the seam of her lips, she opened her mouth and welcomed his tongue inside. He pulled her body more firmly against his and kissed her harder, sliding his tongue around behind her teeth, licking the insides of her cheeks, tasting the roof of her mouth. Her tongue tangled with his, and then she sucked on him, raising the heat between them to a higher level.
Finally they broke apart to breathe, and all the while he rubbed gentle circles on her back, and murmured soft endearments against her neck before diving back in for another hot kiss. This time he sucked her tongue into his mouth before thrusting his deep into hers, subconsciously demonstrating what his aching cock was hoping for.
She pulled back a little from him, but before he could panic her fingers began unbuttoning his shirt. Yanni let her take the lead, reminding himself, This is all about her. Let her set the pace.
Fortunately, his self-control wasn’t tested too far as she ran her palms against his skin, then tweaked his nipples, before pulling his shirt out of his pants and unbuckling his belt.
Yanni slid his hands down her back to cup her butt as she unzipped him and freed his hot, aching cock. He sighed with relief as she pulled it out of his briefs and held it firmly in her hand.
“Oh, yeah, that feels good,” he said, lifting up her skirt and slipping both hands inside her panties.
She wiggled in his arms, encouraging him, so he held her ass with one hand and brought the other forward to cup her mound.
Her fingers were doing wicked things to his dick, pressing on the throbbing vein and rubbing his moisture into the head. When she ran her fingernail under the ridge between the cap and the shaft, he groaned. It felt so damn good.
He slid his longest finger into her channel.

"Flash Flood" (MMF)

Blurb: Phoebe Edwards (Fi) is on her way to a business meeting when a landslide causes a tsunami of water to flood the road, sweeping her and her compact car into a river. She manages to get out of the car and is pulled from the river by Connor Wilkie and Patrick Bourne who are also on a business reconnaissance in the area. After a night of extremely satisfying “thank God I’m alive sex,” Fi is embarrassed to wake screaming from a nightmare of being drowned in her car. The men soothe and comfort her, which leads to more sex. Fi is given a week off work to recover, and the men invite her to accompany them on their trip. They have a great time, but Fi is unsettled by undercurrents and things she cannot quite grasp. Something underhanded is going on and she doesn’t know what it is.

STORY EXCERPT

“Holy shit!” Fi took her foot off the accelerator and looked at the water across the road ahead of her. The water didn’t look deep, but what did she know? She was a city girl, and while this wasn’t precisely the back of beyond, it was definitely not the city.
She eased the car onto the shoulder and snatched her instructions from the passenger seat beside her. “Route 94 through Brownsville. Check. Right onto Merravalley. Check. Five miles past Merravalley, right…Ah, no. Not been through Merravalley yet and no mention of water.”
A big, black SUV roared past her, straight through the water without slowing down. Fi watched. The water appeared to be only five or six inches deep. “Okay, that seems doable. Just keep driving, though likely not quite that fast.”
Fi buckled her seat belt and watched as a minivan came toward her from the other direction. It slowed a bit, then drove straight through the water. Fi stared at its wheels, but it seemed her previous guess about the depth of the water was accurate.
Fi gripped the steering wheel in a ten-to-two position, placed her four-inch platform sole on the accelerator, and pulled back onto the road. She stared at the water, entering it slowly and carefully, relieved everything seemed fine. Something white appeared in her peripheral vision and she looked to the left to see a wall of water roaring toward her.
“Holy shit!” Fi screamed, and planted her foot flat on the accelerator. “Come on, you piece of shit. Move! This is not the time to be worrying about a low carbon footprint. Let’s get out of here!”
But the compact car was not designed for a fast take-off, and it was not even halfway through the water when the tidal wave hit like a battering ram, forcing it sideways and along what had suddenly become a river.
“Steer into the skid,” Fi told herself, but her brain was screaming that there was a huge difference between a skid and a tsunami. “Come on, car, you can do it!” The engine coughed and died.
Fi peered through her windshield. She was moving sort of sideways in what appeared to be a river, where no river had been five minutes ago. Also, her feet were wet. What the hell? Fi looked at the floor of the car. Yep, water. She banged her hand on the steering wheel.
“Can’t you do anything right, car? If this was a James Bond movie, you’d float!”
The water rose inexorably over her ankles. “Okay, time for the rat to leave the sinking ship. But I’ll have you know, car, these shoes cost me two hundred dollars and I’m not happy about this.” Then Fi giggled. The car would have cost the company a lot more than two hundred dollars and her boss wasn’t going to be happy, either. Well, if Windle and Partners had bought SUVs instead of environmentally friendly small cars, likely she’d be at Merravalley already.
The water was over her calves now and there was no time to waste. Fi thrust her papers into her laptop bag and zipped it shut, slung the handle over her shoulder, pushed her head through the short strap of her purse and pressed the button to lower the window so she could crawl out of the car.
“Electric window. Of course it doesn’t work,” she chided herself and tried to open the door. It wouldn’t open. The pressure of the water was preventing it, no matter how hard she pushed. The water was almost up to her knees now.
Fi swung her legs to the side and braced her heels against the door, leaning forward to hold the catch open with her right hand. “Legs are much stronger than arms. Come on, legs!” she puffed.
The water was now level with the seat and desperation added extra strength to Fi’s efforts. She slammed her feet against the door and finally, it opened. Water rushed in as she pushed her way out.
The laptop caught around the steering wheel and Fi screamed and swore as she hauled it loose and forced her body out against the press of the water.
The river was deeper than it appeared and Fi’s four-inch platform soles scrabbled unsuccessfully for purchase on the bottom. Her long, dark-brown hair came loose from its braid and tangled around her face. Fi gulped for air and got a mouth full of water instead.
She forced herself to relax. Go with the flow, Fi, go with the flow. As her body stilled its frantic movements, she bobbed to the surface again, and was able to turn around in the direction of the torrent and look for the shore.
A man was standing on the edge of the water, yelling at her and waving his arms to attract her attention. Next to him, a cowboy was swinging a rope over his head. What’s a cowboy doing here? Her laptop was dragging her down, but no way was Fi leaving it behind. All her work files were on it. Determinedly, she swam at an angle across the current, making for the two men. It really wasn’t far, but it seemed to take forever to move even one stroke closer to the shore. Why am I so damn tired?
A rope splashed down on the water in front of her. One more solid kick with her legs, one long stretch with her right arm and she reached it. Fi grabbed it with both hands and remained upright in the water as the cowboy and his friend pulled her toward them. She ended up flat on her belly on the grass at their feet, rather like a beached whale. The waving man hauled her to her feet as gallons of water poured out of her clothes. And out of her purse and laptop bag, damn it.
“Your computer’s gonna be cactus, love. But someone’ll get your car and the mechanic should be able to get it running again.”
“That piece of shit belongs to the company, and if they hadn’t been so worried about global warming and had given me an SUV, this never would have happened.”
“Didn’t you hear? There was a landslide over at Merravalley and the river burst through to carve a new channel.”
“I noticed.”

Writing is a career

If a writer wants to be taken seriously, they have to treat the job seriously. That means that the comments they make in public need to be professional. Of course, they can talk about their children, and their pets, and their garden, exactly as you might talk about such topics at work. But just as being rude to the boss at your day job may see you unemployed fairly quickly, so too being rude about your cover or your publisher may see you not getting any more covers or contracts.
Publishing is a small world. Everyone knows someone who knows someone. So switch off the internet before raving about how your heroine has long blonde hair and is overweight, and the cover model is a size zero with a bob cut. Spell check your blog posts. Answer emails from your publisher and their staff in a timely manner. In other words, you’re at work, so act in a professional manner.
And most of all keep writing.
Some days it’s natural to want to come home, sink into a comfortable chair, and relax. Do that. For half an hour. Then get your butt in front of the computer and start writing. Every page is one page closer to the end of the book. Even one paragraph is better than nothing.
I’ve been able to write a number of books because I write shorter books. Mine are mostly under 25,000 words. This means fewer characters, less complicated plots, and the book as a whole is faster to write. The shorter length suits me. But that’s a matter of personal choice. The only rule is to keep writing. Every day if you possibly can.
I write for several different publishers. Because I write across different genres, I send each different genre to a different publisher. Writing several different genres helps me stay fresh and different, and writing for several different houses means I can have more books released than might be the situation at just one publisher. Of course, it also means that sometimes I have edits for several different books at once, which can be a headache. But overall, the system works for me.
Promotion can be a big drain on time. I have a blog and a website. I try to update my blog several times a week. I update Facebook and Twitter most days, sometimes twice a day. With chat loops, I read and respond to two loops I like, that have a mix of authors and readers. I go to at least one chat a month but these can vary from a special chat day that’s so busy it’s almost impossible to keep up with the posts, to ones where it’s like you’re talking to an empty room. I know often people lurk on loops but I really don’t know how helpful such chats are, either the incredibly busy one s or the almost silent ones.
I also guest blog from time to time, and enjoy visiting other people’s blogs and talking to the commenters. But again, it’s a big time commitment, first to write the blog, then to keep coming back and commenting. My hope is that every now and then someone will enjoy my blurbs and excerpts and be prepared to try one of my books.
Do I have the best plan to make my writing a successful career? I don’t know. All I know is that I’m doing my best to treat this seriously as my profession, to learn all I can, and to keep researching, keep learning and keep writing.
So, in the hopes that someone reading this enjoys paranormal stories, here’s a taste of “Naked Statues”.
Wanna know what statues get up to at night?

“Naked Statues” blurb:
A series of naked, well-endowed statues in the local park encourage lovers Fleur, Ricky, and Heath to indulge in some hot, naughty public sex. But is there more to these statues than rock-hard abs?
Lily and Flynn have been trapped inside a statue since last Halloween. When a mischievous God with a love of all things sexual swaps them for the trio of lovers, can the strength of their love set them all free?

WARNING PG13 EXCERPT
Heath was staring up at a statue of a woman wearing nothing much, with one huge breast exposed.
“Climb up and kiss it, Heath and I’ll take your photo,” called Fleur.
Heath shrugged the backpack off his shoulders and took a run up to the statue, catching hold of her elbows and kissing the breast, before dropping back to the ground.
The three laughed over the rather blurry photo on Fleur’s phone then Heath picked up his backpack and they continued walking around the little path, which took another turn.
“We seem to be walking around this never-ending hedge-thing. I wonder what it is,” commented Fleur.
Still another turn took them to the opening in the hedge and a sign.
“It’s a maze! Oh awesome, come, on,” called Fleur running inside. “Right or left?”
Ricky scanned the sign, but there was no key to the maze there. “Likely we’ll be stuck here for a hundred years, slowly starving and turning into skeletons,” he wailed in as mournful a voice as he could manage.
“Our bones will be found by archeologists on a dig in the year 2100,” added Heath in a sepulchral tone.
But Fleur just laughed, turning right and left as they meandered through the maze.
After half a dozen dead-ends, and just when Ricky was getting tired of the game, they found themselves in the center of the maze. There was a cluster of benches to sit on, and a fountain.
Predictably, in the middle of the fountain was a statue of a man and a woman, dressed in long cloaks and very little else, in a clinch.
“You know, people say art today is pornographic, but when you look at statues like the ones in the Gardens here, they’re definitely anatomically correct,” said Heath.
“Oh yes. Just think of all the famous paintings we studied in school. Most of them were naked too. And David,” added Fleur, licking her lips.”
“David who?” Ricky wasn’t following her conversation.
“Michelangelo’s David. Now he’s mighty easy on the eyes.”
“Didn’t the museum hang a fig leaf over his cock or something so ladies wouldn’t be shocked?” asked Ricky.
“Yeah because he’s not circumcised.”
“So what?”
“The real David would have been circumcised, but the sculpture is from the Renaissance and European men weren’t circumcised then, so I guess Michelangelo sculpted what he saw,” added Fleur.
They talked about art for a while, the conversation rambling as it does among good friends. That was something else Ricky loved about his partners, actually how they’d begun their relationship. The easy way they could share about pretty much anything at all. Finally Ricky stood up. “Better keep moving. We’re a long way from the bus stop.”
After a few false starts they found their way out of the maze, Ricky having taken pains to memorize the directions they took. They kept walking on the little path, deciding that it circumnavigated the maze and would bring them back to the main path.
“Oh look, another statue,” said Fleur, jogging ahead to look at it. Then she shrieked, “Oh my God, Ricky, this one looks exactly like you.”
Heath punched him lightly on the shoulder. “Your turn for a photo opportunity, my friend.”
Curious, Ulric lengthened his stride until he stopped in front of the statue. Well, damn if Fleur hadn’t been right. She’d mentioned this statue. It was a huge wolf, his head raised scenting the air. Ricky stepped up on the base, then launched himself up to clamber onto the wolf’s back while Heath snapped a picture of him.
As soon as he was back on the ground, Fleur grabbed both men’s arms. “It’s a sign. We should fuck here.”
“What?”

A hot werewolf ménage!

“Werewolves Can’t Fly” is the sequel to “Flight to Joy”, but you don’t have to have read the first book to enjoy this one.

“Flight to Joy” blurb
Mermae can fly. She’s had to keep it a secret, and has never met anyone else like her. One evening she thinks she sees something as she lands after a flight, but decides she’s mistaken, so walks home.
Kade sees a woman flying and is intrigued. He can fly, yet has never met anyone else who can. So he follows her to her apartment to learn her address, then hurries home to his partner, Iain, to tell him the good news.

And now the story continues…

“Werewolves Can’t Fly” blurb:
Mermae joined Kade and Iain four months ago. Halloween is almost here and Iain, a werewolf, is desperate for them to commit to each other.
But how can they keep their secrets in a city? And if they move out of the city how will they earn money and live?
Iain asked werewolves Dwyer and Nelson, who live on a secure farm, if his family can bond there and run on Halloween. Dwyer and Nelson are thrilled Iain has found his third person and welcome them to a little hidden cabin.
The mating is wonderful, but all their other problems remain unresolved. Is there a solution to them?

WARNING! PG 13 EXCERPT
They lay on their sides in bed, sweaty and relaxed, satiated, yet Iain wanted more. With Halloween so close now, he wanted to convince-- no, that's wasn't fair. All decisions had to be made freely. He wanted Mermae and Kade to understand how badly he needed them to mate, to commit to each other, so his wolf side would be fulfilled.
Hoping he could explain himself properly, Iain said, "Halloween is special to a werewolf."
"What, you're going to howl at the moon?" teased Mermae.
He tugged her closer to him. "You never know, I might. But I really will need to run properly that night, and I want you both to be beside me. Traditionally, we fuck, then run, then fuck again on Halloween."
Mermae slid up on an elbow so she could look into his face. "There's more than that, though, isn't there?"
"You're a very perceptive woman. Yes, there is. We usually fuck the first time as humans and the second time as wolves, but that can't happen in our triad. But the ritual, yeah I need to complete the ritual. I..." Iain broke off. He didn't want to pressure her, or Kade, although Kade knew a bit more about how important this all was to him.
"You want us to commit." Mermae spoke slowly yet firmly.
Iain rolled over and lay flat on his back staring at her face, trying to read the expression behind her eyes. He nodded. What if she turns me down? What if she isn't ready yet to take this step?
"Okay. Let's just go through this all again. You can bite me without turning me into a werewolf. You've bitten Kade and nothing's ever happened to him. Right?"
"Yes." Kade spoke at the same time as him. Iain was going to add more, but it was obvious Mermae was still thinking, so he waited for her to finish.
"The commitment is binding. Once we commit it's for life. Except that you're going to live a hell of a lot longer than Kade and me. Does this mean even after we die you can never commit to another two people?"
"Yes, it does. But I've been told in committed triads that include non-wolves, the humans tend to live quite a lot longer than regular humans. As you know, I've never lived in a pack. We were lone wolves. My three parents and twin brother were killed by hunters when I was a teenager and when I looked for a pack, they were all one male/one female packs, and much bigger than me and..." Once again he couldn't finish what he wanted to say. This was not the time to pull the pity card. Mermae had to decide for herself, not because of anything he said, but because she wanted to commit to him and Kade.

What is it about werewolves?

Why are readers and movie goers so attracted to werewolf stories? Is it because we all love to cuddle a furry puppy who trusts us and offers us unconditional love?
Do we want to add that devotion and love to the thought of a hot, hard, hunky man who is strong, protective, and dominant?

I have to admit the idea of the Alpha, protective male, is delicious. The man who puts his mate first in his priorities and is physically equipped to fulfill all her needs. Add to that some cuddling and, oh yeah, I’m there.

In “Dogged Pursuit” Dwyer is convinced his mate is another male, Nelson.

In “Were the Hell?” the two men know they’re right for each other, but there’s magic in the air as well.

And in “Werewolves Don’t Fly” Iain, the werewolf in that story, is united with Mermae and Kade whose paranormal abilities are quite different from his.
But in every case the men are strong, capable, and utterly devoted to their partners.
