Mirrors

Please welcome Tanith Davenport to NN. Thanks Tanith for starting off our Creep Fest! It's a joy to have you on NN. Plus I have to say I really Like your first name. Can you guess why? Tanith/ Tabitha? Very close huh? Now I'll turn it over to you. 

I’ve never been a great fan of Halloween. I wasn’t much of a trick-or-treater as a child, and these days I usually try to be out so I don’t have to sit indoors with the lights off when the next generation of demons and skeletons knock on my door. For me, a large part of the enjoyment of Halloween is from the delicious undercurrent of creepiness at the sight of lit pumpkins and scary decorations, and it’s a fact – almost nothing scares me.

I won’t claim to have been unscareable my whole life, but certainly now I am. I love to watch horror films, but when reviews describe a new one as “jump-out-of-your-seat scary” I find myself rolling my eyes – it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a good one, and even that didn’t make me scream. I used to be afraid of ghosts, but since I started studying the paranormal, I discovered just how mundane it can be. Paranormal investigations on TV involve people panting and screaming like something out of The Blair Witch Project, but in reality they involve people calling out to spirits over and over until finally the pipes bang. So that doesn’t scare me either.

You know what does?

Mirrors.

No, that’s not because I’m so ugly I scare myself. For some reason I am terrified of looking in the mirror and seeing something that shouldn’t be there – someone behind me, someone else’s face looking back, a hideously twisted image, you name it. The film Mirrors was designed to freak me out.

And so when I wrote I Heard Your Voice, I decided to take back the power and have a scene where a cute ghost comes out of a mirror.

Tamar Steele is a paranormal investigator with an unusual talent – she attracts spirits when she sings. She also is stuck in a dead-end relationship with her team’s medium. So when the ghost of an attractive man floats out of her mirror, he has one purpose – to change her life for the better.

Sadly, no matter how much I sing at my mirror, I’ve never had a hot ghost come out of it. But I’m still hoping.
