Post by Casea Major -- Eight Male Archetypes

In their book “Heroes and Heroines: 16 Master Archetypes," by Caro LeFever, Tami Cowden and Sue Viders, the ladies identify Eight Male Archetypes in literature

Here are the eight with a brief description:

The Chief -- This hero is the quintessential alpha. He might have been born to lead, or perhaps he conquered his way to the top, but either way, he’s tough, decisive, goal-oriented. That means he is also a bit overbearing and inflexible.

The Bad Boy  -- This is the rebel, or the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s bitter and volatile, a crushed idealist, but he's also charismatic and street smart. He hates authority and doesn't buckle under to anyone, which is why he often chooses jobs where he's his own boss. He's the perfect outlaw.

The Best Friend -- This is the beta hero. He's kind, responsible, decent, a regular Mr. Nice Guy. This man doesn't enjoy confrontation and can sometimes be unassertive because he doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. But he'll always be there.  He's a people person and he'll always put the needs of others first.

The Charmer -- Fun, irresistible, a smooth operator, yet not too responsible or dependable. He might be a playboy or a rogue, but he's doesn't commit to a woman easily. He's not crazy about hard work, and he might be in sales, or a gambler.

The Lost Soul -- Tortured, secretive, brooding, and unforgiving. That’s this man. But he's also vulnerable. He might be a wanderer or an outcast. In work he's creative, but probably also a loner, so he might be an undercover cop, or do something artistic.

The Professor -- The first time you meet him, this logical, introverted, and inflexible guy might not be your idea of a hero, but take another look. He is genuine about his feelings. At work, he likes cold, hard facts, but he's also honest and faithful, and won’t let you down.

The Swashbuckler -- This guy is action, action, and more action. He's physical and adventurous. Fearless, he’s a daredevil, or an explorer. He needs thrills and chills to keep him happy.

The Warrior -- This man is the reluctant rescuer or the knight in shining armor. He's noble, tenacious, relentless, and he always sticks up for the underdog. If you need a protector, he’s your guy. He doesn’t buckle under to rules, or and he doesn’t go along just to get along.

I tend to lean toward the Charmer when I'm watching tv, movies or reading a book. But I tend to write Warriors and Chiefs more often.

In my 1Night Stand story Night with a Dom, Dominic is The Chief. He is a 'get-outta-my-way-so-I can-lead kind of hero. Alpha to the core.

At first glance a few of these struck me as similar with very subtle differences, but when I started applying the definition I found more variance then I first thought and it's not always easy to pin down one type for a complex character.

So you tell me – which archetypes are you more drawn to? And why?

Book spotlight: Night with a Dom by Casea Major

Night with a Dom
Casea Major

I came up with the idea for this 1Night Stand story while watching football one Sunday afternoon in late fall. I wondered what kind of catalyst would propel someone into experimenting with their darker sexual desires. What would cause someone to take a small step out of their comfort zone to seek fulfillment for a craving they'd never satisfied. That is how Night with a Dom was born.
And as for the football tie-in -- If you buy the story and can find the hidden football reference email me and maybe you'll get a prize.

Mel sucked in a breath, and opened the door. The darkened room flickered with the light of at least a dozen candles. She squinted as she walked in. The smell of incense and roses wafted in the air. Her sight adjusted, and the darker shadows of the space became visible. She scanned the scene.

In the middle of the room sat an oversized bed covered in black velvet and satin. Her arms and legs quivered. A roughly made wooden table stood with two straight-backed chairs in the corner, and a tray of appetizing food awaited.

She stood frozen, anticipating his appearance. Her heart thumped in her chest. Was he hiding? She began to turn—

“Do not turn around, Miss Manning.” His voice whispered against her ear.

She jumped at the husky sound, but didn’t try to move away.

He ran his hands across her shoulders and trailed his fingers down her bare arms. “Are you frightened, kitten?”

Her skin tingled at his simple, but intimate touch. The heat from his massive body radiated against her back though he never made contact with it. Although she couldn’t see him, his presence filled the room, and the walls seemed to shrink at his closeness. “I’m a little scared. I’ve never done anything like this before, but I guess you do—”

His finger glided up her shoulder to press against her lips and his whispered rebuke filled her ear. “Silence.”

Her eyes fluttered closed. Pleasure and fear mingled in her mind and over her skin. She wanted so bad to turn her head and look at him, but somehow she knew she shouldn't.

The spicy masculine scent of him filled the air, and his moist, heavy breath sent waves of heat  down her neck. “During this portion of the evening you will only speak when asked a direct question, and you will address me as ‘Sir’. Understand?”

Concentrating on his words, she had to strain to hear him over her pounding heart but nodded. In the dim light of the candles, her chest rose and fell rapidly. Excitement and fear zinged to her extremities and every place in between.

“There’s nothing to be frightened of.”

He trailed his tongue from her earlobe down to her nape. She gasped and tensed her shoulders as he nipped and sucked the sensitive skin. Goosebumps covered her from head to toe. Her nipples hardened and throbbed. The mystery of him enticed her as much as his touch and scent.

He swept his hand slowly over her stomach. She melted back against him, the heat of his body wrapping around hers, instant, carnal and very real. Throbbing need pulsed between her legs, replacing the chill of fear.

“I’m going to remove your dress.”

“Okay.” The word whooshed from her. Dizziness caused her to sway. Is this really happening? His velvet baritone held a familiar lilt she couldn’t place, but surely if she’d heard that sexy sound before, she’d remember. Right now she was so aroused, it could be her high school boyfriend and she wouldn't know—or care.

“Okay, what?”

Her body tensed at his rebuke. “Okay, Sir.”

“You have enough discipline coming this evening for past transgressions, Miss Manning. Let’s not complicate matters by increasing their number. All right?”

“All right, Sir.” She sucked in a breath at the mention of punishment. What would he do to her? She had stipulated mild discipline, but what did that mean to him?

One Knight in Brooklyn – Who doesn't love a good KISA?

KISA (Knight in Shining Armor) is my new favorite acronym – and there's nothing we romance readers love better than a good KISA.

The KISA is the gold standard in romance heroes. He is the one in every fairytale with a Happily Ever After.

I wondered what would a modern-day knight look like and where might we find one? Could we even find one? And if we did, would we recognize him?

What makes a good KISA? Is it his winning smile and stunning physique? Or is it his attitude and heart? The sacrifices he's willing to make for others? Maybe our modern-day KISA have replaced their shiny armor for other protective gear. But to me anyone willing to risk his life for another is worthy of the title.

That was part of the inspiration for my new 1-Night Stand Story, One Knight in Brooklyn. I wanted to take an idealistic young woman and put her in a situation that, by all appearances, looked like her fairytale fantasy come true. Then I wanted to completely shatter her unrealistic ideas with a heavy dose of reality and see what would happen. What ensues is a fun, zany adventure in Sherwood Forest that forces Marianne to reevaluate her expectations. It leads her to the conclusion that heroes come in all shapes and sizes and actions speak louder than words.

Robert, the somewhat rough-around-the-edges hero, hasn't dated since the death of his wife 3 years before. But at the prodding, cajoling, and general pain-in-the-assin' of his in-laws (That's right in-laws) he books a one-night stand at the Castillo Resort in Niagara Falls.

He doesn't know how it happened, but he ends up in a castle near a forest where he meets a smokin' hot Lady Marianne. According to Robert, "If she was a fire, she'd be a god@#&% 5-alarm ringer! And she's what the guys at the station call a 10/10 – which means on a scale from 1
to 10, she's the top no matta which way she's facin' – if ya know what I mean."

One Knight in Brooklyn is a romantic adventure that will make you laugh out loud and leave you
with a big satisfied smile – if you know what I mean. **wink**

Blurb:
After signing up for a one-night stand through an exclusive matching agency, hopeless romantic Marianne Caldwell is swept away to a medieval land where she hopes to spend the night with a
worthy man of honor.
Unsure of how she got from the Castillo Hotel in Las Vegas to a castle in the English countryside, Mare finds Robert, whose stunning physique and winning smile immediately convince her he's the Robin Hood she's been seeking. But despite his efforts in saving her from a corrupt sheriff, his Jersey Shore accent and coarse ways unravel her romantic visions.
With her fairytale fantasies coming unhinged, Mare must decide if Robert is just a crass car salesman from Brooklyn or the chivalrous knight she's looking for.

One Knight in Brooklyn Excerpt:
“Well, Dallas, what did a pretty gal like you expect from this deal?”

There was no way in hell she would answer that question. So she employed her stellar skills of diversion and subterfuge. “What did a guy like you expect from this deal?” Okay, maybe not the cleverest line she’d ever come up with, but this guy with his mesmerizing eyes messed up her mojo.
He leaned back with his elbow on the mattress and flashed a brilliant smile. She swallowed hard. “To get to know a lovely young woman such as yourself and have a little adventure. You think you
can handle that?”

Could he be any more cocky? His thinly veiled innuendo struck her with the delicacy of a baseball bat. No question he was hot. From a purely physical standpoint, he was perfection, but did anything rattle around behind those blue eyes? She crossed her arms over her chest and
tilted her chin. “What I want to know is, can you handle that?”

Oops, she hadn’t meant for that to sound like a challenge or an invitation, but even to her own ears, it did. He stood, his long legs closing the distance between them in two strides. She braced her legs to hold her ground, but retreated toward a wall. So much for holding my ground. Pressing her head back against a branch, she looked up into his even stare. God, his eyes were Ceylon blue, his lips full and lush. He stopped in front of her, but continued to lower his head
toward hers. Other than the rustling wind, only her ragged breathing sounded amongst the leaves.
Robert braced his hands on either side of her shoulders, effectively trapping her between him and the tree. Every cell in her body buzzed with electrical current, and her gaze helplessly transfixed on him. The lids of his eyes lowered, and his straight nose brushed against hers.
“Can I kiss you?” His whispered request tickled her skin.

Chills swept over her heated body. Her knees gave way, and she sighed out some inaudible response he apparently took as affirmative. He brushed her lips with a kiss.
