Please Welcome Breathless Press Author Ava Delany

Interconnected Romances- The romance with secondary characters.

Here we are, another day, another stop on my Beginnings series blog tour. Today, I want to talk about one of my favorite kinds of series. Interconnected stories.

I've always loved the sprawling romances where characters pop in and out, playing their roles in other character's stories. If done well, when I read, I get so excited I can't wait to see each character's story and revisit old characters in later stories. A fun example of this, in my opinion, is the group of best friends who each have their own story, and you see the whole group throughout all the stories.

For me, I think this love started with a series I read early in jr. high—I think it was jr. high anyhow. The story was about five high school students who were all friends. The four books followed them from freshmen into senior year. Along the way there were falling outs, coming together, troubles, triumphs, and one sweet romance developed. When I finish reading, I missed them all. I even reread the series when I entered high school, and it was like visiting old friends.
The Sherbrooke novels, by Catherine Coulter quickly took their place in my affections, as I grew older. Those stories became fast favorites that I still reread on occasion. Heck, I still smile when I think of some of my favorite moments.

That's when you know an author has done their job right. When you care for and miss the characters like they are real people. That's the true wonder of this type of series and the reason I have so much affection for it. In fact, I like it so much that the several characters in my newest trilogy are friends.

In A Librarian's Desire (available now), we find ourselves at a frat party with Todd, the wild bad boy who also happens to be friends with the hero, Daniel. We get to see a small glimpse of his playful and wild personality (and his hotness. lol).

A Soldier's Woman (available 9/09) takes us to Daniel's old high school group. While at a get together, we meet Debbie, a friend of the heroine Janelle. We see her strength and loyalty, as well as a bit of her wild side.

And A Surprising Day (available 11/04) starts in a fast food restaurant with Daniel and Todd—who is meeting Debbie for the first time, much to the amusement of Daniel, our laid back observer.

I like revisiting the characters so much, both as an author and as a reader, that these particular characters are also in the homecoming series, The Librarian's Love, The Soldier's Return, and The Wedding Night.

I hope that you enjoy reading these novels as much as I enjoy writing them, and that the characters stick in your mind, even when the stories have ended.
Tell me what you love about interconnected stories. I'd love to hear your opinions on this fabulous type of series.

I love a good series. In fact I prefer them. Like you said I like to revisit older characters even if the story doesn't revolve around them. I get very attached to certain characters and series are a great way to still get little glimpses of what's going on in their lives. Great blog! So glad you stopped by NN on your blog tour.

The best thing about interconnected stories is re-visiting characters again in a familiar setting. Sometimes the setting can differ but their personality are the same and now it's turn to get their own story. It's great when secondary characters in one book become the main ones in another. A series I'm really enjoying is the Black Daggerhood series.

I love interconnected series.
If I have gone through all the trials and tribulations of certain characters in their story, I love to see glimpses of them in the next book--to make sure they are still happy, LOL..
