Frustrating Book!

So what happens when you pick up a rather interesting book? The cover looks cool, not cheesy or over done- simple and to the point. You turn it over and read the little blurby on the back- it's sounds so awesome! That's it you get it and can't wait to dive right in.

21 chapters later, your still waiting for something to happen. Well, at least I am. I am almost half way through, what could have been and I'm still kinda hoping will be, a very cool book. I don't want to name names, but I'm sure a few of you have considered reading it, or have read it. It's a paranormal. Witches, daemons, vampires the whole nice yards. It takes place in England. There's a mysterious happening that cause the portangiats to be put in harms way. There's a budding love story.

But NOTHING has actually happened. NOTHING!!! This is a meaty book at nearly 600 pages. It's very wordy too. Nothing wrong with either, but when there's nothing to keep your attention, no near death happenings, no passion, just pages of story that do nothing to move the story along.

Maybe it's just me, but I was kinda thinking paranormal stories had some action, or romance happening in them, with creatures being such passionate creatures.  This book has so much potential, and I keep reading hoping that this story is just a late bloomer and I'm going to blown out of the water. But I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to be let down.

Am I being to hard on this poor book, or is it a prerequisite that paranormal books have to action? Could it be just my personal preference that I need an action packed book to pacify my short attention span? I also feel that there is a lack of emotions. Things happen, people do things, but there is little about how they feel about all of it.

There is a line in the book about the main characters first kiss, and all it said was, "Then he kissed me twice in the French manner." That was it. Nothing about how she felt about being kissed by the sexy vampire who was taboo.

Again, I think I may be being too hard.

What makes a good/great paranormal story for you? What are the elements you require in order to loose sleep over reading it?

Am I the only one?

I don't think you are being too harsh. I need action and passion in a story to keep me interested. I am less patient than you are if I'm not hooked by chapter 5 then you have lost me and I put the book down. And I will lose sleep for a great book. I write paranormal and yes these creatures tend to be very passionate. So you are right on that part as well. This doesn't mean its a bad book but maybe just not the right book for you. We all have our preferences. Mine is lots of action, passion and not too wordy. Great blog!

Hi Duckie! There are very few books I've put down. Very few I've stayed up reading thru the night. I'm a lover of action and multiple characters. If there's more than one story to follow, I'm all over it.

I just read one with an interesting back cover blurb - which actually bore very litle relation to the story itself. The blurb was about one woman; the story was actually about four different women and their various problems! It meandered from one to the other, and I couldn't empathise with any of them. I did actually finish it to see if it got better. It didn't!
Yet the author was credited as 'best-selling'. Go figure!
